My cousin's MR2 just passed the sniff test here in Brazoria county without the cat installed but his car runs on E85. They only tested the computer with my Evo through the OBDII port. I didn't have a cat but had the spark plug anti-fouler installed on the with the rear O2 sensor so there was no CEL. None of the shops here have dual rollers for AWD cars, so they couldn't test one anyways.

On his car, they pulled it on the rollers then held it at like 15 mph then at 35 mph. I believe it was in 2nd and 3rd gear so probably around 2K and 3K rpms. My car they just left it at idle and plugged the computer in to the OBDII port. Then they checked the gas cap to ensure it seals. I passed with flying colors but would have failed had they done a visual check under the car. They also rolled up my front windows and checked the tint which was illegal, but they let it slide.

Actually, I have no cat AND a CEL. I passed emissions and inspection in MA. My mom brought it down so I wasn't there. The same place failed a freind of mine for having off white reverse lights (They are bright white instead) and slightly off headlamp height.

Frankly it probably should be closer to that around here... just because you can doesn't mean you should!

There is a pretty serious fine here for removing a working cat, but after that quick fact (and you will of course never get caught in your garage) they have a hard time proving anything. The even dumber thing about that is that if your cat is working you are not legally allowed to remove it, even to replace it with a higher flowing unit, one that cleans better, one that is quieter, etc... no excuses.

California is a bit of a different story, but still not written in a way that is actually productive.

You have to be getting hooked up then because in Pa they still do a visual emissions testing which means if you have no cat then no passie .

1994 Viper V-10 passed with no cat. Just barely but it passed. Although the chick was unable to get the inspection mirror under the side skirts. The car was so damned loud indoors. Then the same woman wasnt able to drive my car because it was stick. She also banged my f'ing door off of a cooling fan while my car was on there spinners. Im sure shes flipping burgers now. Im a product of a generation which saw convertors as needless junk. Ive seen the error of my ways and will never again purposely defeat emissions equipment to gain power. We all share the air we breath

Here in CT they use the old mirror to look under the car to see if the cat is there.
