Installing sensor IN the Cat?

Hi Guys!

I want to install my LC1 sensor in the "rear narrowband" position on the EvoX..

On the X the rear NB is actually mounted halfway inside the cat. ie if you are looking at the cat from the side the NB is 50% the way along...

My question is - Will the heat of the cat cause any damage to the LC1 sensor.

I don't really want to get a bung welded as I want to keep the "stock" appearance..

Secondly - I assume the reading's will be slightly off (due to the cat), would 0.2 - 0.5 AFR (reading leaner than reality) be fairly accurate

--edit--
So I did a bit of reading, supposedly the LSU4.2 sensors have a operating temp of less than 930°C, and a MAX of 1030°C (http://wbo2.com/lsu/Y258K01005e03mar21eng.pdf)

Cat's supposedly light off at 260°C, and have a operating temp of around 760°C and really a max of 1100°C (http://www.aa1car.com/library/converter.htm)

So in theory I *should* be ok....

Anyone have any first hand experience with this?

Cheers
David

No, but if you have plans to run the car extremely rich for some reason temps at the cat will increase beyond the listed threshold.

Which will destroy your cat as well as your 02.

I wouldn't do it personally because I'd rather see a closer to real A/F. But I'd think you should probably be ok.

I've never seen a X exhaust, but for $100 on the 8 and 9 you could get a resonated test pipe and just put a bung on that. You can remove it later to make it stock looking. I guess, unless you're trying to fool Mitsu techs.

I like that option better as well. I'm always hesitant to do it though because you can sell them later for money. (To people returning to stock) But if you factor in the cost of a decent test pipe, you might as well. Especially if you aren't planning on doing a full exhaust.

I wouldn't put the lc-1 there. The cat will affect your afr readings. The WB02 should be mounted before the cat. As for the temp, your just fine Feel free to try it, but i like it closer to the turbo outlet (faster readings)

I think you will be fine. I can't speak for installing a wideband sensor inside the cat, but I ran a wideband sensor post-cat in my DSM for years. It worked fine and from what I remember the readings were identical with a cat or test pipe installed for me. With the cat, the readings were just a little smoother.

thanks guys... I want to retain my cat, environment friendly

Any more information or first hand experience on heat generated by the cat?

I am not so worried by the AFR changes

Why don't you just adopt a baby seal instead or something...

Wait wait wait, you got an X? Awesome tephra! Congrats! I will keep telling people to send you donations so you can buy some goodies for it

Stick the LC1 sensor wherever the stock sensor was, it'll be fine. We run them on cars w/o cats all the time with no problems. In fact, I have run them on the o2 housing with no long term ill effects.

I got HB Speed to send me a "0 258 007 058" - which is Bosch #17014...

You can get them for about $52 USD - which isn't too bad
