EGTs for Road Racing

Anyone have any input on safe to agressive EGT levels for road racing. My street, autox tune peaks shy of 1600*F in 3rd. I am sure 1/2nd gear are lower for autox. I am more worried about road racing. I figured i should turn the boost down but i wasn't sure.

In the past, i have peaked almost 1700* with no ill effects however that was only 1-2 pulls, where lapping a course might cause irreversible damage.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

I'd try to keep it at or under 1600 in 4th

I've hit 1700 a couple times on track in my personal Evo with no issues but I wouldn't want to make it a habit.

Should always check EGT's in 4th if possible as that is the gear you will really have to worry about them.

thanks

that's pretty much what i thought in terms of temps. I never test in 4th, mainly cause i don't like winding out 4th on the street but that is definitely a good point.

Thanks everyone.

4th gear is longer allowing for more time for everything to heat up as well as more load on the motor. If you are hitting close to 1600 by redline in 3rd you will probably be a bit higher in 4th and even more in 5th

What about 5th gear? Wouldn't those EGTs go even higher?

Does fuel affect EGTs or just make it safe to run higher ones?

my guess is a 5th gear pull to redline would get u to 150mph+, i don;t think people are able to try it out for the obviouse reason.

5th gear would be higher.

Fuel, timing, boost all affect EGTs.

I thought runner 1 is usualy the leanest and that's where the probe should be at, << is this right?

Well, we're talking about road racing tuning, which involves a race track. I'm pretty sure I'd hit 150 on the back straight at VIR with my current power level and I plan to log the next time I track the car.

BTW, my probe is in runner 1.

My probe is in the collection portion of the manifold as fluid dynamics tells me the temp will go up when the pulses all meet up and the pressure goes up. It's true. I regularly see 1700-1800 there. I can't speak for how much I trust my sensor, but that's what it says. I do have some heating issues. I just warped my SS 02 housing. Strange because I'm only running normal timing (3 degrees peak torque up to ~14 at redline) at 23psi on the stock turbo and 11.5:1 AFR with water injection.
