How good of a laptop will I need to start tuning?
get a utility called "Rightmark CPU Clock"
it has a good battery info screen - showing the designed capacity of the battery VS the actual max...
when batts get old they loose their ability to store energy.. You might find with a new battery it will last longer.
also rightmark can lower the CPU speed to use less power too

How much is Rightmark? Where can I get it? I have tried to put it on powersave mode and I even adjust the max percentage that the processor can reach and it still dies fast. But yeah my battery is shot. The computer was three years old this March.
You are so damn smart Tephra. I hope to grow up and be big and smart like you someday.
You should get a beer for being that damn smart.

I'm using MSI Wind U100 netbook, 1.6 Ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB Harddisk, 10" screen, bluetooth, wireless B/G/N. It can run different O/S (Linux, Vista, Windows 7 & even Mac OS X).
This netbook is capable of overclocking (up to 24%) and underclocking from bios. Even without underclocking you can get over 4 hours of battery life. This is like the evo of netbook.
I suggest using MSI U115 hybrid netbook for tuning as is got both HDD & SSD, battery life of over 12 hours.

A netbook is definitely a good choice for a tuning laptop. After my 7-year old Dell Inspiron finally died, I went with an HP Mini 1030NR netbook. It has enough processing power to handle Evoscan and ECUFlash without a problem, and I like that it has a full-sized keyboard (some other netbooks had smaller keys that I just couldn't type on). It's relatively cheap and a lot more user/tuning friendly than the heavy Inspiron.

My old laptop had a dying battery and I just got a power adapter that plugs into the cig lighter. Always powered

Best Laptop for tuning, ever best Tru MOBILE NB is Apple MacBook Air. Weight is like nothing, 12" screen is good for EcuFlash, many tables at one time is always better ... PLUS 5 hours with WiFi ... This is great ... but it cost lil more than must be ...
And with Apple Air we get nVidia GF9400 GraphicCard, that is many times better than integrated one, that seen in almost all netbooks, so we can play Games when we not in Flash ... )))
I tried that when my battery got so bad it didn't even last for 30 minutes.
For a lil bit i used a power inverter and the home power adapter, but the I just bought a HP power cord that plugged into the cig lighter instead
i thought i would update this thread with what i posted above. i just got the laptop in the mail last night. i booted it up. and got started with setting up evoscan and ecuflash. i downloaded evoscan 2.6 and ecuflash 1.42 and so far everything is working great with vista 64. the tatrix cable hooks up to both programs with no issues. ''yet''
next i got to redo all my ROM patches and ill be all set to go.
