so ive always had this image in my head where I had a laptop in my car yes i know, but im thinking is there any way i can have a laptop or some sort of stand alone boost thing where I can have multiple settings for dayly use, then race, then im giving her all shes got capton setting at the push of a button with out haveing to reprogram everything each time. where at the push of a button on the laptop i already have the three programs for my car that control boost and air/fuel.
i want to be able to drive my car to the track then switch to race and hit the track then back to DD to drive home then to work the next day. or have my DD seting on then when she needs the power all of a suddin just hit the max set then back to DD or some crazy crap like that.
so is this just a dream of mine or is there some software or a device that can give me this?

Car is DD'd on pump @24psi and whenever I feel the need to get crazy, flip a single button for +40whp/+60wtq.

 

Err, what about altmaps?

If you run ecu based boost control then all you have to do is flip a switch, hold your ICS button, or hold your throttle down for a bit before starting the car depending on how you have it set up and you'll have different boost, injector, AFR, and timing maps. There wouldn't even be a need for a laptop. What else are you looking for?

Altmaps allow you to run two different sets of maps. Basically you set up maps for daily driving and another for racing. Sorry there aren't more than two sets of maps available at this time. As for selecting and tuning, yes you simply tune your car for each set of maps then you hold your ICS button for a preset time in order to switch to a race map or switch out of it back to a DD map.

 

It's called map switching and yes it can be done.

 

Just to avoid confusion for the OP altmaps and map switching are the same thing. It does include air/fuel ratios, timing maps, boost, as well as a few other things such as certain injector compensation settings in order to make it easier for e85 users to use dual maps for e85/gasoline.

 

what parts do i need for this? will i need a piggyback? im guessing i need a electronic boost controller, any special kind? where can i get the parts i need?

 

You wont need any parts except for a laptop for the tuning, an openport/tactrix 1.3 or 2.0 cable and enough patience to read for hours on end or enough money to pay someone who already knows how to do the work for you.

An electronic boost controller is unnecessary because your car pretty much already has one and the ecu can control it. At the moment I'm using a fuel pressure regulator solenoid connected to the original bcs wiring which is controlled by Tephra's gear based boost control tables. Many other people have claimed great success using the EGR solenoid instead but the classic solution is to spend $45 on a GM 3-port BCS.

That is it unless you don't already have a wideband o2 sensor which would be necessary for ANY tuning system. I would suggest that you start by reading through every one of the stickied threads at the top of this forum and then just start reading anything that might seem interesting to you. There is a whole world of ecu tuning and the learning curve is a bit steep when you first get into it but within a week you can do basic tuning and and everything will start to make some real sense.

 

read the thread that was suggested to you... the Tephra mod is a mod for your stock ECU and you use ECU-controlled boost, and you switch between 2 maps (dd/race or e85/pump gas etc.) that are both loaded onto your stock ECU.

 

No extra parts needed (unless you want a tephra switch, but since you have an VIII, you can just use the ICS switch). Alt-maps & map switching functionality is possible using the stock ECU flashed with a tephra ROM (no piggy back or EBC needed).

However, you might want to get a 3-port boost control solenoid, to enable you to hold a higher level of boost at higher RPMs. And you might want to get an Omni or JDM MAP sensor too, if you want to do direct boost control instead of load-based boost control.
