high knocksum on low load/rpm - 09 stock tune

Hi all

I've actually started this thread on the Ralliart section as I don't actually have an EVO but I was hoping that I could get some more responses by starting a thread here due to more people with EVO's tuning with ECU flash. Hopefully the forum mods won't mind.

I'm finding that around 60 load and 1500rpm I get high knock sums (10-20) when cruising in 6th gear.

I've used the v27 balance 20 GST map and my stock map with the same results.

My car is stock with no mods, SST, 98 RON (93 octane) fuel.

Has anyone else found this to happen when stand alone logging with a tactrix on their EVO X SST?

Any help most appreciated

Marcus

Some images of my logs

Please note I'm in Australia so I'm using METRIC units. that is kilometers and degrees celcius. Except for log 0010.

log 0010 - First time I had logged with the tactrix using the v27 balance 20 GST map, I was doing a fairly lengthy drive up a windy mountain road. manual sport mode.

log 0023 - using stock map, accelerating - manual normal

log 0039 - stock map, cruising - auto normal

log 0045a - stock map, cruising - manual normal

log 0052 - stock map, cruising - manual sport

thanks

I'm not sure if this comforts you or not, but here is all of the knock over a couple of months of driving my 90% tuned X:

this is the count of knock events:

and the average of knock events:

I remember a similar thing happening on my IX. Some knock is natural, but not all of it. The pattern that it takes is a bit interesting though.

Hi,

I see very simillar behaviour as you on Evo X MR with TB - very high knock at 1000-2000 rpm, low load. Some say it if phantom, some say it is caused by clutch.

I have found that making High octane timing map the same as Low octane timing map in low load/low RPM makes this reported knock much less occuring and when it occures it is much lower than before.

Thanks for the replies guys, helps a lot.
Seems that my car only makes knock sums in this area, everywhere else it seems fine.

This leads me to believe that if you can make a timing adjustment and there is less knock sum there is probably at least some real knock happening.

I will try copying the high octane map and pasting it in the low octane map in the low load area. Thank you!

Sorry but this is wrong. There is not necessarily knock happening. If you make your low octane map the same as your high octane map your car will show less knock in general. This doesn't mean there ever was knock, or that there is less knock. By making them the same, it's typically believed that the car shows less knock. The larger they are apart from one another, the more sensitive the car is to logging knock. Thats the theory anyways.

Check out fostytou's stats - the absolute highest peak in both knocksum incidents and values is...

1250rpm / 70load.

So, Marcus, it's fair to say that you are simply observing what generally goes unobserved.

Rich

PS. For comfort, you and I can tweak this area to see if we can reduce its severity.

Yep I've gathered a few people already know about this and aren't really worried about it.

I am still interested in trying to get the knocksum down in that area, can't really hurt can it? Unless the car does something unexpected.

I will use some octane booster next week and see if the numbers go down.

But if it's all the same I want to put the boost pill and the latest balance GST map back in. I wanted to start tuning with the base maps rather than my stock map, but if you want Rich we can experiment while my car is still in stock tune.

Returning to Bryan's base map is fine. Probably better in fact - he tunes with less timing advance in that area than factory tune!

It's also lots more fun.

You need decrease difference between "Hi octane ign map" and "Lower bound timing" in this area.
