evo7/8 - copy ECU mapping??

Hi all.

Im posting on behalf of my brother who recently acquired an evo7 and has no internet at the moment.

The car is bone stock.

The problem with his evo7 is that it seems to be running extremely rich (i personally have some experience with motorcycles, specifically tuning two strokes thats why i think it is rich).
At idle it is rough and spluttery and stalls on occasion and is a little hesitant to accelerate off idle.
I can smell petrol out of the exhaust and fuel consumption is through the roof at about 250-300km/150-185mi per tank on conservative commute type usage.

An acquaintance of ours has a bone stock australian evo8 with a tuned ecu mapping that he says runs harder than stock with a 500km per tank range.

According to him the running gear is the same on the evo7/8.

Is it possible, using EcuFlash/Tactrix or the likes, to copy the evo8 ECU image and flash it onto the evo7??

If so, what would be the easiest and most cost effective method for doing so? Could you please be specific in naming exactly the software/hardware/cable needed?

Thanks for your time and help

Yup but the car will not work properly and may have a few CEL popping up. While practically the same car, there are some differences. Eg. my evo7 came stock without a rear O2 but all evo8s I know of do. Some Evo8s don't have a MAP sensor while my evo7 does. The ROM must account for this.

Pay someone to do it.

ECU Flash ver 1.42 (free)
Tactrix1.3 or 2.0
Laptop with Windows XP or higher.

My 2¢
If you just want it to be more fuel efficient, get a good tuner to tune stock ECU.
I would upgrade the exhaust, Boost Control Solenoid, lower inter-cooler piping and switch to tephra V7 90550701 ROM before a tune.

I think that the ecu/tune has nothing to do with your issues, if everything is stock including the tune then the car should run fine. But since the car is 10+ years old it might require some maintenance, check the following:
-MAF sensor, it could be failing.
-O2 sensor, they also fail on regular bases.
-Boost leak, very common issue & would cause the car to run rich.
-Spark plugs, coils & cables
just to name a few :]

The car was purchased from a dealership so by law all those bits an pieces and the car as a whole should be up to spec before sale, but who knows...

Its actually back at that dealership as of yeseterday getting checked over as it had other major issues. Its been deemed to have a faulty rear diff that was making excessive banging noises, and a lot of clunking out of the front suspension. Might be a lemon unfortunately. Lets see what else they pick up on, finally....

Thanks for the quick replies lads , ill keep you posted on this development

Thanks for the advice dude.

I read in another post somewhere that JDM and ADM evo8 do not have rear O2 sensor.
A dealer also mentioned to get either evo7/8 tuned ecu and it is plug and play. Dunno...

Maybe somebody else can confirm this?

If I were you I would try swapping an EVO 8 ECU into it and just going from there. I've seen a lot of people swap ECUs with great success

Sounds good man. Let me know how it goes! I'm quite interested in what you'll end up doing

This could be region dependent but I used to think the same about swapping ECUs and tried the same thing (for different reasons). The 7's wiring harness was completely different to the 8's.

From what ive been reading the OZ delivered evo8 is the same hardware as the the evo7 bar the AYC? Something like that.. Ill give both ECU's a shot once we get access to either.

Looks like theres a little bit for me to test and narrow down.

If it is the O2 sensor will it tell me whether it is front/back?

Once again, thanking you all for your input

Keeping you posted

You can actually run the USDM 9856 Evo 8 ROM on a JDM 7, I have done this, but there is little to be gained and you do need a bit of specific ECUFlash knowledge to get it working.

The best bet is to swap to the 9055 range of tephra ROMs for the 7 where there is much more support and less hassle. First though you need to fix the over fueling. You can post your ROM here if you like just to get it checked out.
