Advice on tune / beginner sanity check

Evo 9, mods:
  • TBE
  • Megan 02 Housing
  • ETS "LP2" LICP
  • Intake "high flow" cone filter

91 octane, Arizona

I get very little knock, occasional 1s/2s/3s at high RPM

Things I've done to the tune:
  • Applied JDM mivec map
  • Set afr to 11.2~11.3 from 3000rpm to redline
  • Pulled timing around 6500-redline to eliminate a ton of knock from the stock tune
  • Increased timing in the 220-240 loadcells between 3000 and 5500 without introducing knock

Does it looks like I have much room for improvement? Should I expect to be able to get more timing or higher AFR anywhere?

Like I said, during 3rd gear pulls, I occasionally see 1's and 2's and even 3's here and there so I'm not sure if I should keep pushing it. I ordered a MAP sensor so I'll be able to log boost soon, but other than that, just looking for any advice in general.

What are you using to log AFR? You need an actual external wideband kit to log AFR.
13 degrees timing is a bit high for 91 fuel @ 6500+ I'd decrease it by 2-3 degrees.

Im not sure that I understand. What you see in the wb02 column is what my external wideband kit is logging.

As for the timing advice, thanks, I'll bring it down a few degrees

with 91 oct... i would rather see high 10's on the afr's thru the low rpm high load stuff... just for safety
and the timing ramp curve does look a little agreesive in the high rpm and 260 down to 200 load

I prefer seeing the fuel maps resemble the wb02 more than what you have. Not to say you can't have high timing maps and low fuel maps but I'm a little OCD that way.

I'm not suggesting you do it as you seem to have fairly low knock with decent timing and it would require a complete rewrite of all WOT load cells on both maps. I know there are lots of different views on it though. Generally the DIY approach I see is people seem to mostly alter timing.

I'm no expert myself though.

Your 3500 to 4000 transition is too wild. I think you should consider finding the smoothing spreadsheet posted somewhere on evom and using that to clear up some of those large jumps.

5500 mid/high load in your fuel map seems odd too. Remember you're going leaner on a fuel map while trying to push more timing, if it's to restore from a high rich position then I wonder in what situations it doesn't work. But I hear people talking about going from 11.3ish to 11.7 at redline, and others say 12 dropping through to low 11s makes sense too. EGT can come into play with both situations.

I don't mind seeing inconsistent 1s and 2s it can be related to fuel trim additions to fueling in open loop. With that said what are you seeing as trims on mid?

Personally I taper from 11.7 through to 11.2 @ 6500rpm and down to 10.8 above that, simply because with my mods there's no gain for my car in shifting above that. Oh and last but not least, I'm running my new engine on 98 octane in Aus (apparently equiv to your 93).

You have an odd jump at 5500 in AFRs from 11.2 to 11.9 then back to 11.2 and it's due to an odd jump in your AFR map between 5K and 6k and 200-260 load. I would definitely smooth that out. Also, work on smoothing out the timing map and try to make the transition from cell to cell more consistent.

Timing map needs smoothing in the 180-200 load area at 4000RPM. You need to log boost as well as load looks low.

I'm no expert at tuning. But I would think you'd want your load to peak and hold or peak and slowly taper down. Yours is peaking at 3500 then dropping and rising toward 5500 then tapering down again. It might be related to an unstable boost curve. I know you mentioned you'll be logging that soon.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I spent a lot of time the past couple of weeks adjusting the tune per your recommendations, adding a MAP sensor, Hallman MBC, and switched over to tephrarom v7. So you can now see boost in the logs.

I reduced timing like you guys said, and turned the boost up to ~23 tapering to 18~19. I'm running into two issues now that are really confusing me.

1) My 2byte load jumped WAY the hell up. my peak used to be 240ish and now it's like 280. I only added a couple of pounds of boost, I wouldn't have expected it to increase so much. Does my 2byte load look abnormal to you guys?

2) I'm encountering knock at 6250+ @ 240 load. I see that when it occurs, it's usually attempting 6-7 degrees. This is NOT what's reflected in my timing map. This is several degrees higher than what I'm requesting. Where the hell is the ECU getting these higher numbers? there are no adjacent cells that are 7 or even 6 that it could even be interpolating from. Anyone have any advice here?

Again, any advice is appreciated (too much boost? low AFR? etc)

Load is fine, but remember the ECU users other corrections in addition to the base map. You still need to smooth the ignition map, you have more advanced timing in the 250 and 260 columns than in the 240. Once you have sorted that, take a degree out in the 6500 RPM and 230 cell and re-smooth.
