Did you get an error when loading it up in ecuflash or did it just work and can you see tables?

 

I mean with the map itself.am I looking for problems with the map? How do I know what needs to be changed

 

Oh, if your asking how to tune, then your in the right place. You just need to do a whole bunch of reading. There is a sticky at the top of this subforum that contains all the important base level stuff you should go read about. Most of it is going to be evo related, but it will be very similar. You will have to parse out whats important for your car vs the evo though.

 

I tried loading it to ecu flash but it says the correct definition are not there to read it. Did I do something wrong?

 

Try reading Merlin's guide to ECUFlash and watching the YouTube videos. You'll get an idea of how to navigate the software.

Yes you should. The questions you are asking were questions I was asking when I first tried my hand at tuning. The tutorial and videos listed above will show you the way.

 

I fixed the issue I got Senate's master definition compilation and extracted it to the directory and I can now access the different maps. Very excited but also leary. So much to learn hmmmmmmmmm. Where to start

I'm watching the video series suggested above but it's a bit overwhelming

 

I'm a bit timid though because I'm on the third video and I can see that when using an Evo rom there are extra settings that my base Lancer does not have, for instance the mut table and the obd inspection drop downs are absent on my ecuflash window

 

Oh in the video he mentions that it may because the car is older. For example if an 03 rom (like mine) is loaded it may have less features than a rom from a newer model year.

 

It can be a bit overwhelming at first. Take it one day at a time. Learning how to use ECUFlash is not an overnight affair. The videos and even the tutorial are old but the basics apply. Don't get hung up on the fact that their screen looks completely different from yours. The options/features differ from ROM to ROM and even from person to person depending on the patches that were applied to their XML file and even how they set it up. The interface of ECUFlash is customizable. Here are a couple of tips on using ECUFlash:

1. Save a copy of your original ROM. When making changes, save to a new file.
2. Use an XML editor when adding patches.
3. Make one change at a time and test. That way you don't lose track of which change did what.
4. Finding patches that you need can be a chore, but with the right keyword search you should be able to find them on this forum.
5. Evoscan is a great tool to use to verify your changes. See if this works with your car.
6. If you don't have one already, install a wideband AFR gauge in your car.

Don't be afraid to dive into tuning. In my short experience so far, ECUFlash is not the easiest platform to learn on, but once you get it you'll be able to navigate standalones with ease.

 

Thanks that was a very helpful post. I'm already started a word document while watching the videos to try and log what I am learning. I'll keep at it and if I run into anything too perplexing I'll ask here. I thought I was gonna be shot in the foot and thrown out of this forum since I only have a base Lancer and not an evo. Turning out to be very helpful though.

 

After watching almost all of Merlin's videos I have one question. Hopefully some1 can clear this up. When does the computer use the low vs high octane map for fuel and timing?
