Issues reading ECU with ECUFlash 1.42 and 1.3U cable

Well, I bought a 1.3U cable a while back when I got evoscan, probably 2008 is my guess. I am trying to go Tephra v7 and having a heck of a time. I read my ECU a while back and when I tried to read it again running 1.42 all i got was an instant error in the log saying the vehicle could not be contacted right after selecting Evo9 from the list. I tried 1.28 and after selecting Evo9 from the list it gave me a dialog stating that to turn the car On and then press ok. 1.28 had no issues reading the ECU as well and I managed to make another backup that had an identical md5sum.

So my issue is this, with 1.28 I can't flash Tephra v7 and with 1.42 I can't communicate to the ECU. I did some searching and it sounds like some say the cable may be bad, but it has no issues reading in Evoscan and no issues in older versions of ECU flash.

If it is the cable, what is the recommended thing to do now, get a 2.0 cable or a new 1.3 cable? There anywhere that rents them? lol since my current cable works just fine in logging just not flashing =/.

Oh one more thing I also run a small battery, had it hooked up to a tender when I was doing the reading. Evoscan showed voltage as 12.2 with the ignition off (but in the on position). Could it just be I need to connect a regular battery?

Thanks for any help!

Did you buy the 1.3 cable from Tactrix or did that come from evoscan? Sometime back the tactrix folks had put something in to check the cable and it only worked if it was one of their cables. There is a workaround for it but I don't remember it honestly.

I had the same problem with the same setup but to get around it I use the latest evoscan to read and flash the ecu. This is how I installed tephra v7. Do whatever you need to do on ecuflash, save to the evoscan Rom folder, and flash thru evoscan. I'm not on the pc right now so if you need detailed info let me know.

Hmm I'll give flashing thru evoscan a try, had not thought about that. Anything special you should do there (i.e. install evoscan last so I use those drivers).

Yeah I bought it bundled with evoscan, guess that may be the issue as well. I had a ticket open with tactrix and they were pretty quick to respond but they have not responded since my last email which included the fact it was bought from evoscan and not them directly. Very odd. Are the cables not the same thing, or are the evoscan cables made by different people?

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I'm not to sure what it is. I remember reading something about the 1.3 cable keys not working with anything after 1.29. All you have to do is save as a hex file.

Tactrix who wrote ECUFlash make and sell their own cables. Ditto EvoScan so yes they are made by different folks even though AFAIK they work the same way.

Interesting, I had always thought that evoscan just resold the 1.3 cables. With luck I'll be able to try flashing with evoscan tonight.

Sweet working perfectly so far just did a test write and all is good. Horray for pseudo-pirated cables lol...

So flashing with the newest version of evoscan and a 1.3u cable worked? This will allow me to swap to 94170715 Tephra V7 ROM rather then the 94170015 I was trying to swap to, right?
