Italy
insurance
Insurance is more expensive in Italy than it is for most of the rest of Europe. I agree that $14,000 seems kind of high, but I am a married, 31 year old male, with no tickets, no accidents, and have been insured through USAA for about 5 years now, and I pay $4000 a year for full coverage with $1000 deductibles in Italy through them right now. The funny thing is if I buy a beater to drive back and forth to work and insure it with liability, my full coverage on the EVO will be cut in half.

I think USAA is pissed at me or something. It might have something to do with when I totaled the 2003 Evo that I used to have. I had to swerve on the highway to avoid a failed abortion that was driving a PT Cruiser and the car got all kinds of loose on me. I tried saving it, but the ditch was a lot softer than the other traffic. It was defensive driving at its best, trust me. USAA listed it as my fault, but here's the kicker: 2 days after the crash, I find out about the sticker recall for the maximum weight that you can carry in the car. I had the car loaded down with stuff because I was moving from Mississippi to Virginia. I had the car weighed and it was still below what the inacurate sticker said that it was the max. However, when I received my recall sticker in the mail a couple of weeks later, I pulled out the weight station papers and, sure enough, the car was indeed overweighted.
When I got my 2004 Evo RS, they never acted like there was a problem and I picked up my insurance policy right where it left off, at about the same premium (around $140 a month for full coverage). However now that I am in a "high risk" area, I don't think they want to insure me on another ~$30K car. This is probably their way of letting me know that they have me by the *****. At least the girl on the phone at USAA sounded cute.....the second time I called. The first time was some dude, and I don't want to think about some dude + my *****.
Hmmm, do you have to hang with USAA? I'm with Geico now and they claim they have overseas insurance too. Also, I would still try and hit some local italian insurance company.
And those friends of yours that totaled it... they were probably driving too slow
It's Italy, out with the middle finger, other hand on the horn and shout loud

Dude seriously it does not sound like you did your homework. My car sits about 5 inches of the ground and they let me ship it. I am stationed at Ghedi Air Base Italy, it it was hella easy to get mine over here. Just took a long time. As far as the insurance thing, USAA is really good about giving affordable insurance out here unless you do not know how to drive and you have had a lot of accidents. Anyways, hopefully you have figured it out and got your hands on a 1,2,or3. Later dude.

USAA wants a lot of cash for the Gaeta, Italy area. They say there's just too high of a risk over here and I can agree with them. My commanding officer has been over here just as long as me and he's already had 1 car totaled and 2 others stolen. My buddy brought his Galant over here and it's covered in scratches and dents, and the thing was in great condition when it first got here. Other friends have had their cars literally crushed by the crazy drivers over here.
What's done is done, and I'm not upset anymore about not getting the Evo 8 shipped over here. Like I said before, it gives me a good excuse to puck up an old school evo and take it back to the US when I leave.
Im currentley getting PCS'd to Aviano AB in northern Italy. I bought a EVO X 2 months ago. I pay 240 $ a month in the U.S through USAA at 500/500. I am 23 Years old no accidents/tickets and to get my car insured in italy it is a whoping 12k a year or roughly 1000$ a month. WHY???? am i really going to have to sell my car at a loss? i was told that i can only use GEICO/USAA as my insurance companys while over there. any help is appreciated, i leave in a month and a half.
EDIT: Also the collision coverage is what seems to be the number 1 factor which is sitting at 9000$ a year. why is collision so damn high? why is this car so much to insure and none of the agents i talk to have any idea.

*This post is not meant to detract from your questions. I hope someone chimes in and answers them. You may want to consider storing your car here while you're over there. But just seeing this thread brought back from so long ago made me think "hmmm... what was happening in the world when I originally posted on here?".

I bought a 99 VW Golf TDI and full coverage w/USAA is $110/mo ($42/mo for liability only), which is what I paid for my X in San Antonio!!! I put the X in storage, although I still may have it shipped over here once I start getting the OHA/BAH and utility allowance. For utilites you'll get 612.75 Euro/mo or $825.92 USD/mo plus COLA, base pay, and whatever your BAH/OHA cap is. From what I'm told, it's more than enough to cover your utilities and car insurance. I'll finally find out on May 1st though.
I've only seen 1 evo since I've been here (a white VIII), a couple Ralliarts and Lancers. I want to speak to the Ralliart guys and see how much they are paying for insurance. You'll see a bunch of SRT-4 Neons and a blue on blue Caliber SRT-4, R32/33/34 Skylines, no GT-R's though, tons on BMW's and civic hatchbacks.
Like I said, I just got here less than 2 months ago so if you have any questions about the area hit me up. Hopefully your X isn't PB...can't have 2 of PB's rolling around here!
I PCS'd to Aviano Feb 28th from Lackland. I'm 29 and was paying about $260/mo for 2 evos w/USAA. Sold my IX and was planning to have the X shipped here but was quoted $342/mo for it!!! Speaking with my sponsor prior to coming, he warned me about the outrageous insurance rates and told me Geico/USAA only as well. When I contacted USAA Europe, they told me Italy has the highest insurance rates in Europe. After driving on the narrow roads, with the tiniest parking spaces ever and watching Italians drive/follow waaaay too closely.......maybe that's why, idk! There are a lot of cars with wreck damage and dents here.

Im moving from randolph, small world i guess!
well i called geico and they got back to me in 3 days, i guess thats the italian workday for ya, they said they could give me full coverage for 340$ a month at 500/500 deuctabile. that is very tempting as that would allow me to have my car and not have to let it sit at my parents house in flordia ( would have to drive there before i moved) and be useless. i was already looking at buying some type of 90's bmw when i got there, but now i need to look over all my options.
I've been here in Aviano for just over 3 years. I left my IX in the states though :\ it's being stored in my parents garage until I get back. I'm on my 3rd car since I've been here lol right now I'm rocking a 1995 fwd Audi A4 1.8 n/a. I wrecked my first car when this Italian lady ran a stop sign and barreled into the driver's side of my car.
The company I financed my Evo through is a small credit union and they have a company policy to not sign a lein of release allowing a car financed through them to leave the country... I wish they would have told me that in the first place... I sure miss my Evo. But it would have been wrecked from some Italian and sustained hail damage, so in that respect I'm glad it's safe in a garage lol
Anyway, welcome to Aviano!

Im in Aviano, being here for 4 year and i ran into the same problem when i first got here. Ended up going thru Italian insurance, it was about $5000 cheaper a year. Once i turned 25 i went with geico (270 a month) not bad. USAA still wanted like 650 a month.
Italian insurance is an option too eh? I'm going to have to check into that. So for you 2 that have been here 3 and 4 years, are there any meets or shows? How about road courses or drag strips nearby?
I didn't know you could insure through the Italians either. I've noticed there are ads on the AvianoClassifieds web page where people have set up meets and stuff. About once a year there is a base car show that you can enter your car in. I haven't really been able to get into any of it, my Evo was left in the states. I had a pretty sweet JDM prelude for a little bit, but I needed a sedan, so I'm rockin a near-entry-level b5 A4 haha
During this time of year, there's car shows every weekend, I'm going to one 2morrow in Trieste. The car scene is mad different here tho. Italians for the most part arent allowed to mod street cars so when you go to a show, all u see is sound systems and body kits, they love when i come around
. You do have some serious track cars here but they can't run em on the street. The closes 1/4mile (400 meter) track i know of is about 3-4hrs away but its expensive, the faster ur car is the more you have to pay to run it. If i remember right it was like 240 euro for anything faster than 12's :O. There's an event that they hold every once and a while in San Vito (about 30 mins) thats 1/8th mile. Its fun but its not a track, its just an industrial area. As far as road course I dont know any around here but i know about one in Croatia, its about a 3-4hr drive from here.
