Why should power drop off on this turbo setup w/o a wastegate? Conversely, how could adding a gate to the system add power?

I did but the turbo couldn't make anymore power than 672. It was old technology when I bought it where as this turbo is newer.

Nah the 4088 spooled fairy quickly actually. Full spool by like 5500 or so.

Now don't get me wrong the 3794 hit full spool late 6200'ish but it starts around 3000 and the ride up to 8500 is a fun ride.

I don't drag race so it does perfect for what I want.

in a drag race it would really matter, thats why we have 2-step. if a b16 can spool a gt42r and bigger so can our lil 2.0. but interesting to know its more laggy.

Free's up exhaust backpressure.

Pressure is what spools a turbo, but too much up top will kill power. I have no idea why there hasn't been a turbo designed that has a hot side housing that changes volume. Only one I've seen of course is designed by Acura.

Of course there's no point in spooling a turbo when the dynamic compression and flow velocity of big cams is crap down low.

Then again if we had variable lift/variable timing and a turbo that spooled at 2000 rpms, it's not good to put that much load at that low of rpm. Timing would have to be -5 to -10* lol.

Naw, I dont buy it. The compressor is gonna flow max CFM with the gate closed not open.

Depends on the turbo. On Dave's setup he's running a T4 turbo where there is not enough exhaust pressure to overboost. Even if he had a wastegate set to 50 psi it wouldn't be used so why have it?

Stock appearing turbo's need as much wastegate as possible to keep from suffering on the top end because the exhaust housing is tiny.

Your hotside is too big for the response that you are looking for. In my opinion , you would be happier with a tighter a/r.

At what rpm do you cross 20psi?

Yeah, I agree, Bostonhatcher. Thats why in my original response in post 17 of this thread, I referred specifically to "this turbo." This big boy was probably still within its efficiency envelope way after the engine is past its power peak. In the case of this particular turbo on that particular engine a gate would not produce any more power.

Boston, I am not gonna comment anymore on this thread about wastegates. I dont wanna make anymore off topic discussion, buddy. I do find the topic interesting and you can PM me if you want. Take care.

Don't know what RPM I cross 20 at. Don't care personnally.

I could swap a new A/R but this turbo is pain to put on. The fitment of them is horrible and it took 8 hrs to get it to fit correctly. FP said I was the first person to order the twin scroll edition from them.

I like where it's at. I don't drag race at all, just take it out when I want to have some fun.
