My day at the tuning shop....

Today I just got my car re-tuned because I had Kelford 272's and a Meth kit installed. The first time I went to get tuned I had the following mods: Stock turbo, TBE, Invidia O2 Housing, ETS IC kit, Forge BOV, Buschur Short ram, and Hallman MBC, Walboro 255 fuel pump. I put down 301WHP and about 340 Torque @ 25 PSI which i was pretty happy with, because it was like driving a completely different car when my baseline dyno at like 200WHP. After my tune today with the same mods as last but with cams and Meth I put down 328WHP and 323 Torque @ 25PSI. Now my car still moves pretty quick, but one of my friends has a Evo 9 MR with same mods except he has HKS 272's and stock O2 housing and he was able to put down 394 WHP. Now I am aware he has stock Evo 9 turbo and he is also running @ 30 Psi. I don't know if it's just me, but I thought I would probably be somewhere close with at least 350 WHP, and even the mechanic at the shop said i should be putting down somewhere around 370WHP. Does anyone else think the same, should i be putting down more or is this about right, or am I just buggin out because I'm expecting too much. I'm kind of not too sure, any advice or comments is appreciated.

Thanks, John

you should def be 370whp+. do you have a walbro fuel pump...maybe its lack of fuel? Also, check to make sure your meth is flowing properly. (Is it meth or alcohol that your using?). Just to give you an idea... with my evo 8 i made 332whp 332wtq with tbe, hks 272s, buschur intake, walbro 255 tuned by Al at ICS. But there is def something up with your car for it to not make power because I have heard nothing but good things about Sean Ivey.

I agree with what everyone is saying, Maybe Sean will chime in and let us know what exactly happened in this case... maybe he didn't have the right spring in the MBC and he couldn't get over that amount of boost!

Did the OP speak to Sean with his concerns before posting it here?

I spoke with him, We are going to check over a few things and he changed from 50/50 water to full meth. I think maybe something could have been overlooked on our part.

Let's take another look at the customer's convenience.

check your fuel pump, as weird as this sounds the pump mite have something jammed or stuck or something of that nature. Yes you AFR's will seem correct with something lodged in the pump, one of my buddies had an sti making ****ty *** power, and it was tuned perfectly. we went over everything and the only thing that worked was a new pump. running dog *** rich it gained 30+ whp from just changing out the fuel pump.

remember, it only take one bad tank of gas with somthing ****ty enought to F your fuel pump.

do a boost leak test for sure. I have an 04 also, did a leak test the other day and found a few leaks at just 20psi. tb shaft seems to be a popular leak site for 'older' evos. i have almost the exact setup as you and i made 330hp 325tq 23psi at ivey's a few months ago.

UPDATE: I spoke to Sean earlier and there was a miscommunication with my setup so I'm going back to his shop as soon as I can get another day off from work. Thank you to my fellow EvoM members for suggestions and comments.

initially i was running 50% alky (isopropyl) and 50% water. Turned out the alky was killing my numbers. we drained the 50 50 mix and put in straight meth and my car picked up about 80whp once fully tuned. It was thanks to The Shop that we found this problem

Koodos to Sean!

That's the first time I've ever seen a shop reply with such integrity.
