Tuning advise

Hey everyone, so recently the engine let go on my evo 8, rather than building it I am putting another low mileage motor in it and I'm just gonna try to bring back close to stock.

This is my main question. I had 272 hks cams in it, with 780cc injectors and evo 9 turbo with ported manifold.

The long block that I got only has a stock head, I plan on putting the 780cc injectors back in the longblock with the same turbo setup. The pcm is already scaled for 780 injectors. Do you think its safe to fire the vehicle up with the old tune? I'm sure its going to run really rich, but I need to ge the car running first.

Any input would be great?

Why don't you put the cams back in or better yet get some S2's?

You'll need to log the car to see if your tune is going to work for it. That's really the only way to tell. If you have logging capabilities then I can help. If not you'll need to get a tactrix cable or take it to a tuner.

Are you using a Tephra rom? Is it set up to display knock?

For what I know it does have tephra mod on it, I bought the car the way it was. I just need to get it running for the time being because I am going to go a different direction with the vehicle and it will most likely sit awhile, I know there are a few cables in the glove box that go somewhere into the car, assuming those are the cables? I think one of them looked like a serial cable.

Cool. Go to www.evoscan.com and see if it looks like the cable there. If it is, then it plugs into your OBDII port which is above your right knee when sitting in the driver's seat. The serial cable may be for your wideband (if you have one). Regardless, you'll need a WB to log AFR's.

You'll need to get evoscan software to log, which is $25. Then you'll be able to log and see if your tune is, at the bare minimum, safe. Let me know if you're looking to get tuned. I'm running a special for the rest of May.

What direction are you going in?

Im sorry to hear but why/how did your original engine let go? Get this one tuned by a reputable tuner on here. hks 272's are very mild cam throw them back in the new engine they wont hurt anything.

Yea I heard you can run 272's on stock valve springs is that true? I am still debating, I may end up just getting the car running and trading or selling it. I may be looking for another car with lower mileage to drive daily, but I wanted to make sure the tune was safe for the next owner regardless.

to answer your question, yes you can. but if the engine prematurely failed, i would advise not going full throttle with the old tune until the vehicle has been retuned or atleast looked at by someone else.

if the injectors stay the same, and the fueling is the same, then of course you can drive the vehicle around. but again i wouldn't advise flooring the vehicle with an old tune that is questionably the reason the old engine failed.

if you are just swapping engines then selling the vehicle, please make sure hte new owner is aware the tune needs changed before he floors the car.

as far as cables and evoscan go i sell them also from the usa @ http://www.tscomptuned.net/tuning.html

but again as long as its using the same fueling the vehicle is fine out of boost to be ran.

I noticed there are 3 different cable options for an 05 on evoscan, which one do I need? Also if the serial cable is indeed for the wideband, do I need a serial to usb adapter for my laptop?

The one everyone prefers is the Tactrix 1.3U. And yes you need a serial to usb cable to log.

I use the 1.3R, but you have to flash with EvoScan for that, which seems to be taboo for most. It works the same and it's cheaper.

Both the 1.3U or R needs a serial to usb adapter. EvoScan also sells it. Don't get the cheap RadShack one. My customers were experiencing problems with that.

If my cable ever goes bad or I start tuning X's then I will get the Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 USB Cable with the extension cable.

Here's what EvoScan has to say about the 2.0:
Note:
• Openport 1.3U is still the favourite cable for datalogging/reflashing Evo7/8/9 because it works with more software, works with gps nav, and the 1.3U is faster.

• SPECIAL NOTE: OpenPort 2.0 does not work with Live Mapping/Tuning, you will need an OpenPort 1.3U for this.

• OpenPort 2.0 is the favourite for EvoX and the favourite for reflashing Evo5/6, all other vehicles, op1.3U is preferred.

GL!

1.3u is what i sell on my site. but when i remote into customers computers i flash with evoscan since its faster for me. i can transfer the rom, flash the car within 20 seconds with evoscan since it isn't stupid like ecuflash and does not cache the rom image once placed into the application.

in regards to the radioshack / gigaware serial to usb, it works fine if you install the drivers properly onto the computer. prolific works well also and cost 10x less $.

id go with the prolific chipset for the serial to usb since it is way cheaper and works just as good.

1.3u is what most want, so thats what i stock and sell. most people like flashing within ecuflash, so i give them the ability to with my cable.

Good to know. Thanks Tom. Just looked it up, they are really cheap on Amazon (nothing on Radio Shack)!
