Stereo Installation kit on Evo IX
Stereo Installation kit on Evo IX
Does anyone know where to get one of these or if they even exist? I was looking to install an aftermarket mp3/cd player in place of the factory deck. I I checked at Bestbuy and a few other places online and from what I see nobody makes them yet. Surely someone must carry an aftermarket stereo installation kit on a IX......

How is it any different from the 8 ? as far as i know they been using the same crap cd player in there since like 95
try www.crutchfield.com they normally have anything you many need. Also, im pretty sure you could use the VIII harness and it would be compatable.
good luck
What sort of things are you looking for in a kit? Typically if you're just replacing the head unit with another single-din system you're just going to need to swap the stock mounting brackets onto the new head unit and then wire it up. Wiring can be vastly simplified by using an aftermarket wiring harness (enables you to wire everything outside the vehicle prior to install allowing a plug-n-play operation, and also means you won't be cutting into stock wiring). The harnesses can be had from just about any stereo shop or online. You can get the harness for a 2006 lancer if need be and it will work (actually I think the harness hasn't changed since like 95? I forget).
Here is the thing, I planned to purchase the deck at Bestbuy since I have a gift certificate there. They offer free installation on any deck over $100 so I figure why not let them do that as well. When I went down there last week they said that they had the harness in stock but not the installation kit.
They have me a website to look at I think it croche or something like that. Turns out they dont have it either. I just called crutchfield and they say all that is required is the wiring harness. I am just replacing the deck its nothing fancy < $200, so what gives here?

all you need is the wire harness it should fit in the same din size hole as the factory radio.when they looked up your car did they just look up lancer? that might have been the problem

No, I definitely told them it was for an Evo when they looked it up. I looks like I should just purchase the deck and wiring harness and just tell them to install it and that nothing else is required, correct?
Best buy has the harness.. only other thing you need are the brackets that are on the stock radio, unless you plan on mounting it in the lower pocket... then you'll need a radio relocation kit that you get from mitsu..
This will work:

Any car audio shop should have one, like mentioned above.
I can confirm that the harness for a regular Lancer will work in the Evo.

This is funny..... I stopped by Best Buy this past weekend because I have a brand new Alpine head unit that I bought for one of my other cars and I changed my mind on and thought about throwing it in the EVO until I got the Obital piece. So I go to the "head" installer after speaking with one of the morons working the front desk and he confirmed that they did not have a harness for the EVO IX. So I asked him for one for the VIII and he again said they don't make one for a EVO period, end of story and that he knows this for a fact because he's been doing this now for awhile he has had a few EVO's in for head unit installs and they all had to be hard wired. So he then offered to do it for me at and said it would cost a little more since it had to be hard wired and would take more time. I said no thanks, if I got to hard wire I'll due it myself.... there morons...

Stop going to that Best Buy
If they had some experience with replacing the stereo in the EVO they'd know that the lancer uses the same harness.
Seems clear you're dead set on paying someone else to do it, so you need to go to another shop. If they are also unsure as to which harness, just tell them to use a Lancer harness and complete the install. Perhaps you'll teach them something new.

It's just a generic 95 up Mitsubishi harness they use to wire your new head unit in. Also, if anyone is interested I found a harness set up that utilizes the factory amp on the SSL packages. It's pretty cool as a matter of fact because my Pioneer Head unit sounds surprisingly good through it.
