Best sounding setup without a sub?

Hi I just picked up a rs and want to put something in thats going to sound good. I dont want to add too much weight. So I wanted to just put in a deck, front and rear speakers and a 4 channel amp for them. Just wondering what the best setup would be, Id like to get as much deep bass as possible. I know thats hard to do without a sub, but what do you guys think the best setup would be. And are separates the way to go in the front? I guess Id just have to get a set of a pillars from a gsr with the tweeter covers built into them so I could mount the tweeter up high.

Thanks for any help.

I will also be putting in a defi guage setup. What decks will match the stock and defi guages the best?

And would it sound better if you ran the rears like a sub as a low pass speaker and only have your highs coming from the fronts? Has anyone tried this? I dont care how it sounds if your sitting in the back since i wont be doing much of that

I put a Kenwood deck, a JL 4 channel amp (under the passenger seat), and JL speakers in the 4 pre-wired housings.. I put seperates up front, mounting the tweeters on the triangle-shapes piece near the pliiar. I sounded pretty good. I had to add my subs and mono amp because tunes are of paramount importance to me. The added weight in the rear acually helps the rear end stay buttoned down. As for a deck that matches the Defi guages wel that may take some foot-work on your part.

Why not just do a single efficient 10" and NOT do rear speakers?..might be a 10lb difference...and the sound difference is major.

I think separates are the way to go. The timing isn't as nice, but you aren't competing audio-wise, and a higher soundstage is nice to have.

Have you thought of trying some freeair subs in the rear deck? I installed a 10" kicker freeair in the rear deck of my sister's SC400 and my friend and I agree that it's the best sub set up we've ever heard. We're talking about sound quality here, but if you have two subs in the rear deck, I'm sure it'd kick well if you wanted it to.

thanks for the replies guys. I never thought of just running fronts and a single sub. I just really dont want to put anything in the trunk. Ive pulled the spare and carpet and It looks pretty cool without anything back there. Are there any 6.5 rear speakers that will put out any decent bass?

Thanks again guys good idea's

I just ordered a Panasonic Deck CQ-C8803U.

It has the digital amp built in with 31RMS Watts / 70 watts peak per chanel.

It also can run the rear speakers as a sub, has a setting for that.

That is the most power of any head unit I have seen. Crutchfield has them for $299.00.

The site says that it won't fit, but I think it will.

I also ordered 4 DB675 polk speakers, they also say that they won't fit but the openings on my RS are 7" din the 6 1/2-63/4 sonys are a loose fit.

I am betting that the polks will work fine.

Just some ideas, since I also do not intend to run a sub.

Would I need to run separates up front for this to sound good? It would be nice to not have to buy a set of new pillars from a gsr with the tweeter grill in them.

Are you running this setup?

thanks

You dont need to use GSR pillars..not like you cant flush em on the RS model pillars. I would definately do a component set. And yes im doing this currently.

Definitely run components up front. I've been kicking around the idea of putting a pari of 8's in the rear deck speaker location for some decent midbass. This may be an idea for you. All you'll need to do is build a baffle to attach to the deck and then attach the sub to the baffle.

Here is what I recommend. First of all, despite all this talk of a sub it's not necessary in our vehicles if you get the proper components with necessary power. I used a set of JL Audio Evolution Z series, 6 way component setup paired to a JL Audio 300|4 amp. The staging using the stock speaker/tweeter locations is quite good which took me by surprise. The bass offered by the 6.5" drivers in the rear is more than enough for most music (you may be missing some deeper tones if you listen to a lot of hip hop) but this is more than made up for by the amazing mid-rage coverage and top end clarity of the system. You don't necessarily need to spend the money on JL components or amp but something similar that will give you a full fill will be more than you could ever wish for. Also, I swapped my OEM head unit (junk) out for a Pioneer Premier DEH-P88 unit with 8v pre-outs for the amp. Again, this unit isn't necessary but I'd suggest something w/ at least 4-5V pre-amp outs to get your amp the best clarity/delivery. Hope this is somewhat helpful. P.S. I custom mounted the amp on the underside of the rear deck in a small enclosure so it's tucked away and you don't lose any trunk space. Happy listening.

I agree with DontRevMe and ewoevo's advice.

You're going to have to build a baffle for whatever speakers/sub you get. If you can't fit an 8" in the rear deck, there's companies that make 6.5" subs as well. I know kicker used to make some 6.5" freeairs.
