I am assuming you are talking about the 2 way transmitter? I was NOT impressed. with no obstructions we were looking at less than 1/8th of a mile. indoors we were looking at about 200 feet tops.

Then I would question the installation. Or you had one of the first generation responder units and was attempting to use it in a high microwave (airforce or militay base). Installing any alarm/remote start correctly is crucial to the range. I am sure you already know that. All DEI (viper, clifford, python, etc) except the second generation Avital 4400 are able to work from their advertised range, pending a propper install. The normal responder units will do 1/4 mile in optimal conditions. The SST units will do close to a mile in optimal conditions and probably exceed a mile. I have tested my clifford 50.5x with SST at over half a mile away with a start and confirmation every time. This was done in conditions that were not favorable. The car was facing away from my location and many trees and houses were between myself and the car. I was positioned two big residential blocks away. I have no doubt in my mind that with the car facing me and no obstructions in the way, it will start from the advetised range. I believe it will exceed that range if either the car or I am in an elivated position.

it all comes down to your location. if you're in a parking garage, then you won't get much, but if you're in Vermont, with no obstructions, then the system will exceed the advertised distance. it really depends on where the vehicle is and what is between the vehicle and the transmitter. Installation isn't necessarily crucial, but the placement of the antenna is. if that antenna is behind tint, some range is lost, if it is on the dot matrix...more range lost, so keep those in mind when installing the system.

The transponder antenna was mounted at the top of the windshield with no tint. We also used the upgraded antenna with arials that extended out both sides across the top of the windshield.

No airforce base, no airport, just a standard urban location. This wasn't my first install.

I never had a problem starting my vehicle in a closed parking garage above or below ground. I guess if I can get cell phone reception Ok, I dont see why my remote start wouldnt really work.

Who makes these extended antennas? Do you understand the theory behind antennas? <-- Those are just questions, I am not implying anything.
I understand that and assumed it wasnt your first install because I've read your posts in other threads. I am just interested where installers are grounding the units and how they are grounding the units. I also wanted to know where the antenna was mounted and what was done with the excess antenna wiring. All of those are important. I've witnessed range go up from 25ft to 1000ft on a non-responder units just by correcting problems in those two areas.

If you want to be flashy, I guess its ok. If you want guarenteed performance, go with the 50.5x. The 70.5x has at maximum .25 mile range while the 50.5x is at maximum 1 mile. I have tested mile to over half a mile as stated above and in the past. Never had a problem with it. Never has it failed to start. Not to mention, replacement remotes for the 70.5x are almost $200 a piece. Thats double the most expensive price I've seen for a 50.5x remote. And there is a good chance you will break one.

I have an Avantgaurd G4 with a high frequency 2 way antenna that might not have ment into production. It has rediculous range and started from over 5 blocks away. I got it from an old Clifford Tech before the Directed deal. I even have an old Pagemate interface that still works for unlimited range. I never carry the pager but I use it to start the car at airports or places like that.
