Its strange because you are about the 1st person that complains about this unit. I have read many "reviews" in other forums and everybody was happy with it.
I will have mine installed next weekend hopefully (they f*cked up shipping the last time). We'll see.

I've seen other people complain about the lack of bass so I'm not the only one.

Bass did suffer with X100 install in my MR2 (was Kenwood CD head unit) and Kenwood door speakers. But it is an E Stock autocross machine (still cush with AC and Pwr options) so adding more weight was not desirable.

Where are you located? I have a changer that you could hook up to check it out.

What cable are you using to hook up the ipod. You said it was what came with the headunit. Is it the black usb cable with the ipod adapter, or is it the one with the blue plug on the end that plugs into the headunit (KCE-422i)?
