I just upgraded the headunit to a pioneer, and it made a huge difference. Obviously it won't compare to upgrading both the hu and speakers, but I think the first step should be to upgrade the hu then speakers.. give it a shot, you can find used decks for cheap.

 

Pioneer decks are great. Quality wise and sound... As for speakers in my warehouse we sell R.E Audio US Amps speakers and they are pretty good actually.. They are not as big yet in the area I live in but people who have tried them love them. Myself I have the Rockford punch P1653 and i think they are great so either of those choices with a good deck should be more than enough! Good luck.

I agree, Pioneer decks are good I have one with the stock speakers, it made it sound better because of the options it has in adjusting the eq. But I'm running alpine speakers(type-s) an its a pretty nice setup IMO.
