Stereos and Speakers

I'm trying to find something to get for my boyfriend as a gift, and I'm trying it hard to find. I want to get him speakers for his Lancer. I'm not quite sure about a headunit, yet, though. I'm more focused on getting him the speakers. However, the dilemma is that I have hardly any knowledge whatsoever about sound systems. I went to Best Buy and looked at a few speakers that were compatible with the 2002 Lancer. What I heard was that Alpine speakers were the best, but they were $150 for a pair of 6.5" 2-way speakers. That's a little more than I have. I got quoted at another car and stereo place for those speakers, and they were $100 for the same pair.

So here are my questions:

1. What's the best brandname speaker(s) for the Lancer?
2. How much do they cost?
3. Why are they better than other speakers?
4. What's the best stereo/headunit for the Lancer that can play both MP3s and CDs? How much would that cost?
5. Where can I get these?

I don't want to get ripped off, first of all. And secondly, I don't want something extremely cheap because I'll feel terrible if the speakers were damaged or were to break. What I'm willing to pay is 150-200 for speakers. I don't know how much average speakers cost, anyhow. So, if you guys could, just give me some advice. Thanks.

does the lancer have the tweeters in the A-pillar (the support on the sides of the windshield...)? if it does, take the 200 and get a set of component speakers for the front and don't worry about the rears. if cost is an issue (and at 200 yo can get a really nice set of components), check e-bay and other online stores because you can get the same stuff they sell in the stores for 2/3's the price. the only thing you loose by doing that is 1) you'll have to install them yourself or risk extremely inflated prices for installation 2) warranties are no longer valid 3)shipping and dealing with those people can be a PIA sometimes.

choosing what speakers to get really is personal prefference, but i use inifinty kappa series speakers. alpine equipment is very nice as well. might want to try MQ quart off of e-bay or online somewhere (in the stores they are REALLY expensive), those speakers will make him drop his jaw if he has any idea what they retail for.

but yeah, use the money and replace just the front speakers with nice speakers, because they are 90% of the sound you hear anyway.
