Evo IX Speaker Sizes
Okay... so I'm thinking about upgrading the speakers so I checked out Crutchfield to get sizes. It lists both front and rear speakers as 6-3/4". Fine. When I actually go to the speaker selection page, it keeps listing 5-1/4" speakers instead. What's the deal here? it is because the stock speakers are shallow depth and can't handle the bigger magnets of aftermarket speakers? Help!!!

I recommend you put in 6.5". I have Infinity Components 62.9i front and back, all came with adapters. They sound great. The magnet is like 3 times larger, but it still fits with no issues.
Also once you upgrade the speakers/head unit, you will notice your doors will rattle... you might want to also consider sound-proofing your front doors, it's totally worth it. There's a how-to in the how-to section.

you can fit 6.5 speakers with adapters. I myself bought the Alpine type r's and you have to manipulate the adapters (the ones they come with) some to make them work for both the fronts and the rears...

I have 6 1/2" custom made speakers in my 9. The magnets will just clear the trunk tension bar without any spacers. The door speakers will not clear the window glass without an adapter ring. Pete

I have 4 Alpine Type-S in mine. I believe they are 6.5", and they fit fine. I mounted them using 1/4" plastic brackets that I cut from a sheet of plastic using the cardboard template.
