^likely the answer. They probably have instant on guns and they are held "at the ready" as a scare tactic, but also if they need to turn them on someone. They probably realized traffic was at the correct speed so no need to go active.

You could test this, though. Go speeding through there next time and see if you get a signal!

He may have been using laser and not have it pointed at you. I don't think the Valentine can pick up laser if it's not pointed right at your car. It's pretty easy to tell when someone is driving slow for them, so they may have not even bothered clocking you.

Very true, laser isnt as scattered as radar. It's a tiny beam...

@boricua - you only pick laser when it hits you or someone else close. When it hits someone else that is close it can reflect/refract enough that your detector will pick it up.

As others stated - if it isn't fired you won't detect, so it probably was laser or instant-on radar. They don't usually waste laser on school zones in my area; it is mostly used on the Interstates, State highways, etc.

*edit - I know how you feel though, it bugs me when I don't detect a signal as I have had older detectors that started missing signals when they were on their way out. I still get paranoid about that.

Laser will still scatter. My V1 picks it up all the time. The newer guns do not emit anything until the cop decides to check a vehicle for speed. I drive by cops daily pointing a gun at me, yet my V1 is silent. If you are going with the flow of traffic, they wont bother getting a reading, and they dont want to blow up their spot.

Go ask the officer if he can turn his radar on so you can test your V1

I have been with an officer who was running radar. They get pretty good at guessing your speed by eye so they usually only radar the ones that look like they are speeding. What I think happend in your case is that the cop knows if there is heavy traffic or a line of cars. If one is going 15 they will all be going 14 15 16 because they cant go any faster so it is pointless to radar every car in a situation like that.
