Starting problem, that goes "click click". HELP!
Hi Evom members,
I've been facing this starting problem for some time. I've searched the entire forum and i couldnt find a solution to it.
Car :
Evo 9 GT, JDM spec.
20g Buschur, cosworth 272 cams, stock ecu reflashed, relocated battery to the boot
Trouble shoot done :
replaced battery, replaced starter relay, replaced spark plugs, replaced starter, removed alarm system
Situation :
everytime i do a cold start, i will have to turn the key at least 20 to 40 times in order for the car to crank up and start. during the 20 to 40 times that i try starting it, it only produces a "click" sound. all the electronics in the car are fine, eg; cluster, guagees, turbo timer are all working.
the mechanic from the workshop that i go to, suspect its the key cylinder (or whatever you call it, where to insert the key to start the car)
anyone face this similar problem before? any one knows how to solve it? pls help!!! thank you!!!!

-Double check the power wire, and ground on the starter. Make sure its not ripped or corroded.
I'm not sure on this, but i don't think the cylinder cuts off the power to crank it.
Try this
-turn key to on and make a jumper wire from battery to the starter relay. That should make it crank. If cylinder was bad i would think it would turn off randomly?
Also check the wiring going into the cylinder because maybe the turbo timer being installed someone might of done the wrong wire.
Just a few ideas to start

My problem was intermittent also. From my research i think that the starter is not getting enough power. Hence the click of the starter but it does not rotate. you can try to replace some of the wires for the starter with heavier gauge.

i'm driving a jdm evo7 and also experienced that problem. still not buying a new starter, i saw the culprit was the worn carbon brush inside the starter's armateur. since i tried to stretch the springs that pushes the carbon to facilitate more contact to the surface, my problem's solved.
but since some of you guys already replaced the starter, i hope you tried a bnew unit.

Looks like a starter problem I had that same issue check all the wires to the starter make sure everything it tight cause if it's even lose a little bit it will not work .

It sounds like power is getting to the starter solenoid, that's why it's clicking. Get a DVOM and do a voltage drop test on the cable that connects to the starter giving it power. It should read a minimum of 12v. If that's what you're getting I say your best bet is the starter motor.
