All Evos compatible with wireless keyfobs?

Hey guys,

Sorry for the ridiculous question. When I got my 2006 Evo, it came with literally one key. That was it. No backup/spare, no keyfob, nothing. I've been wanting to get a second key cut for a while now, when it occurred to me that perhaps Evo's came with lock/unlock key fobs.

Looking around, I found some online, however before I buy one and try to program it just to 'see if it works', I figured there had to be someone who knows if they all have the receiver in them for a wireless key fob. If they do, I'll pick one up, otherwise, don't want to waste the cash.

I also found all in one keys with the lock/unlock buttons in them, but I think those are more for lancers or newer Evos? Can these be made to work?

On a side note, I think my transponder has been disabled in my ECU, so I should technically be able to get any key that matches cut for a spare right? There's nothing else to worry about? I remember the nice JDM keys I had for my WRX back in the day. Can't seem to find anything nice like this for the Evo though. That's too bad : /

The RS had some accessories deleted to save weight. Maybe a fob was one of the things deleted - dunno. Otherwise all USDM cars came with two keys and two fobs.

Someone on this forum a few weeks ago was wanting to buy a fob off of Ebay and was wanting know which ones worked and how to get it registered. I wasn't interested and didn't pay much attention to the thread. But if you can find it your answers may be there.

Awesome, thanks for the info barney.

I think mine is the gsr model? I'm not sure. Def not the RS. I'll see if I can dig up the thread. Sounds like I may be able to find a fob somewhere.

It depends on what ETACS is installed on the car. My Evo VIII came with a very simple ETACS so I bought one from a JDM Evo and got the wireless locking feature.

You can take the ETACS out and read its label. It is written there wheter it has wireless locking or not.

Disconnect the battery before removing the ETACS otherwise you could burn it.
