EVO 8 Cluster Illumination Flashing

Hello,

Recently I switched my cluster illumination bulbs to LED and everything was working fine for a few months (not sure if it is linked to the problem), anyway today I went for starting the car after 2 weeks sitting, I turned on the car and the dash lights were working just fine, I then started the car and the clusters illumination started flashing randomly (On and Off) at random flashing rates for each cluster bulb. All of my other lights on the dash work well (SRS airbag, door open light, etc are not affected). Now even if I turn off the engine it still does the same flashing.

Battery voltage is at 14 while driving and it was replaced about 18 months ago, I drive the car regularly

Any idea what should I check ?

Turn up your under dash dimmer dial to max brightness and see if that helps. Controls ground level, LEDs are not happy with that may not be getting enough voltage to run.

I have an EUDM evo and it does not come with a dimmer switch. Instead all we get is a rear foglight switch as you can see here.

I have no idea how to control the intensity and I am 100% sure it is set at the lowest point.

I tested the led with a battery and they work fine, but they will flash once I put them in the cluster. I tried with the oem bulbs and they work fine but they are way too weak and you dont notice them unless it’s dark outside

You need to check the feed to your instrumentation and see (with an oscilliscope) if you can see the pulses in the input signal.

I don't have an oscilloscope, can I do this with a multimeter around the positive and negative side of the led ? What am I looking for ?

Anyone doing diagnostic work on even a relatively modern car should have a scope- no excuse. A DMM only updates about 4 times per second, my scope can capture 1,000,000,000,000 samples in a second. You don't need to spend much- you can get a cheap one from amazon.

Check the high and low supplying the LEDs with current. If the relative difference of the 2 is pulsing, then the LEDs are just outputting what they are being given.

The dash dimmer on USDM Evo 9 is a vertical wheel below the switches you show down by the hood release.
