If your shooting 12 inch flames out your tailpipe I think thats reason enough for a cop to pull you over.

I know here in cali no cats means your paying a fine in he neighborhood of $2000-$3000 bux, and possible car impounding

Just run your BOV VTA and it'll shoot flames for sure. You can still shoot flames w/ a cat on. Just not as often. hehe..

All the time man. Just like an afterburner. I heard of a guy that did this and knocked .3 seconds off of his quarter mile time. Fuqin narley.

BOV = blow off valve
VTA = vent to atmosphere

Technically, you're not supposed to replace a cat on any car unless the original unit is failing or defective. But it's much more legal compared to test pipes. I had a highflow cat on my GSX, had a vented BOV, and still had ignitions out my tailpipe.

I'm sure shooting flames out the tailpipe kills the fiberglass packing inside the resonators and mufflers, so don't be surprised if your exhaust wears out faster than usual.

are you serious? That is so not cool. If you run rich enough you can mess up your bearings. That is why people rip on imports and "rice burners".

I knew what they were just didnt pick-up your abbreviations. VTA I thought is NOT good? So, whats the difference between stock CAT and HIGH-FLOW CAT? Does the HIGH-FLOW CAT really help/Is it worth it? If a COP pulls me over with it, will I get in trouble/Is it legal?

High flow cats have bigger inlets and outlets compared to stock. Our stock cats are roughly 2.5". High flow cats might have a less restrictive "brick" compared to stock. I'm not sure of that one.

If a cop pulls you over, you shouldn't get hassled for it. Most cops, if they look under your car, will just check to see if you have one or not.

the maf has already "counted" the amount of air that you have in the system and you are letting some escape without telling it. the ecu dumps fuel for air that isnt there and then you have a rich condition. this might be too much for the cat or the cat isnt there so you get flames.

.
So HIGH-FLOW defintly is a must with performance gains. Is it louder and does it smell like rotten eggs? My friend has a WRX(NO CATS) and my other friend has a DSM GS-T (NO CATS) and everytime they floor it, DISGUSTING smell comes from the exhuast. Is that b.c of NO CATS or what?

It's not a MUST, as people can still make 300whp w/ the stock cat. The reason why you should get a high flow cat is if you get a 3" downpipe and cat-back, you'd want to get a 3" cat to have it 3" throughout. Having a 3" dp, stock 2.5" cat, and then a 3" turbo-back isn't the most optimum setup.

Also keep in mind that high flow cats don't last as long as the OE cat, in terms of being able to pass emissions. So always keep the stocker around come smog time.

I've never experienced the rotten egg smell in my DSMs w/ high flow cats or test pipes.
