and everyone hit it on the head about the flames....basically a nice backfire with no cats=flames. or you can do the spark plug in your exhaust thing....that seems easy although ive never seen it done, nor would i want to do it.

I know here in cali no cats means your paying a fine in he neighborhood of $2000-$3000 bux, and possible car impounding

How about a Highflow CAT, is that legal?

VTA = vent to atmosphere
Technically, you're not supposed to replace a cat on any car unless the original unit is failing or defective. But it's much more legal compared to test pipes. I had a highflow cat on my GSX, had a vented BOV, and still had ignitions out my tailpipe.
I'm sure shooting flames out the tailpipe kills the fiberglass packing inside the resonators and mufflers, so don't be surprised if your exhaust wears out faster than usual.

High flow cats have bigger inlets and outlets compared to stock. Our stock cats are roughly 2.5". High flow cats might have a less restrictive "brick" compared to stock. I'm not sure of that one.
If a cop pulls you over, you shouldn't get hassled for it. Most cops, if they look under your car, will just check to see if you have one or not.

Also keep in mind that high flow cats don't last as long as the OE cat, in terms of being able to pass emissions. So always keep the stocker around come smog time.
I've never experienced the rotten egg smell in my DSMs w/ high flow cats or test pipes.
