boost difference please take a look
hey everyone id appreciate some feedback. 95% of the time i drive my car very easy and 95% of my miles are highway. i normally get about 300 miles per tank. i know this is pretty good as some people get 200 per tank. anyway this last tank im at half and im at only 120 miles with the same driving. i checked my boost controller and all the settings are the same, i have changed none. i have noticed that when im driving on the highway my boost guage is reading much closer to making positive boost than it normally is while cruising. normally as long as im just cruising and not giving it gas it will be in vacuum and not try to make boost, thus giving me decent highway milage. now its just sitting right below zero and eating up all my gas no matter if im trying to make boost or not. i always use 93 octane but this tank i used shell, normally i dont. also its gotten significantly colder out this last week, gone from the 70-80 range to the 40-50 range. you guys think either of these things has something to do??? the colder weather or my car not liking shell gas?? maybe something else. this is murdering my gas milage. thanks in advance.
i wish i could get 300 miles per tank .. sorry that its not happening lately, by the way how do you get those 300 miles, ( shifting at what rpms? or your driving style?) sorry iam new to this whole manual transmission!! apologize for getting off topic
I usually only get 200mi./12 gal.
usually I just take it to 4k RPM and shift and try to keep the gauge in vacuum. Sometimes if Im going up hill in fifth around 3k or less RPM Ill shift to fouth and cruise at around 4200RPM. Although Im turning more RPM the throttle down't need to be open as much and the vacuum is more.

I used Shell gas once and noticed that I lost about 40 miles on that tank. Of course there are many other variables that play into it, so it may not have been the Shell gas. Although, as far as I'm concerned I didn't drive any differently with that tank than I did with any others. Maybe just a strange coincidence, maybe not, but I haven't used Shell gas since.

well maybe it is shell gas then i wont use that anymore. hopefully thats all it is. seems the car wants to boost a lot easier on the highway when i dont want it to. fine when im passing or messing around but when im just cruising at 70-80 i dont need boost. as to the 300 miles per tank i think it might just be that im all highway. i warm up my car religiously and dont drive it until it is warm at normal idle which is right about 900. turbo timer at 50 secs to cool down. during normal traffic i try to stay out of boost if necessary. that means no real hard acceleration and shifting about 2600 or so. its nice doing that cause if you need the boost its only a bit away on your gas pedal. round trip my work commute is about 45 miles a day. 43 of that is probably highway. im sure thats what it is. sorry i cant offer you anything real good just stay out of boost unless you need it. shifting at 4K will not do that for you haha.

As far as getting good gas mileage, I've found it's actually good to rev the engine up to 3500-4000. If I shift around 2600, I find myself under boost to get the car moving. With light throttle I can bring it up to 4k without boost, and the Karman readout on my SAFC is lower than it would be shifting below 3k. Although this may be due to the fact that I'm too impatient to accelerate without boost below 3k.

For short runs, say 10 miles or less , the less warming up the engine has an effect on overall fuel economy.
When it gets cold outside, the gas companies put in additional detergents and additives to help keep the gas from freezing. In Denver it's very common to notice both fuel economy differences and performance differences in our summer and winter gases.
There is a difference in additives but the fuel is also manufactured at a colder temp in the cold months and this also affects it.
I think the main reason for your decrease in mileage is because the cooler/colder air is denser and your car recognizes that and pumps in more fuel to compensate. Also, check and raise your tire pressure. Cold weather will take pressure out of your tires leading to worse mileage especially noticeable on the highway.

plus i wasnt saying that warming up the car gets better gas mileage. he just asked about my driving style and thats what i do. warm her up, cool her down, and shift pretty low usually. as far as being too impatient to accelerate that slowly i normally dont have to worry about it. with all the ****box cars out there i can out accelerate most with no boost.
