264's and emissions....

I have a pair of 264's in my garage with my cars name on them and just dying to go in my car. I have to get my car VET tested every three years so I'm wondering if this is gonna effect me passing. I have a test pipe, but that is easy to change out. If I put these in, I will be having my car customed tuned by DynoFLash within the next 2 weeks if that helps any.

What would likely make a car fail on emissions is excessive valve overlap. If you get the cams, I suggest investing $250-300 in a set of cam gears as well. This will enable you to make adjustments to not only tailor the power curve, but will enable you to dial out some overlap when you go to take your emissions test, which should pretty much ensure a clean test.

If you have a decent tune and a cat I doubt the cams will affect your emissions testing. Even with no tune, in closed loop mode the ECU will learn to trim the fuel to keep things running clean. Basically as long as you don't have a CEL you're probably running okay.

Your on the border line with 264's. But I think it'll pass with a good working cat.

You've go to remember , the Evo is considered a " Low Emission Vehicle "

I'm not so certain that no CEL guarantees a clean emissions test. A choppy idle from large cams doesn't throw a CEL and I'd be surprised if that would pass a sniff test. I'd like to know however if anyone with a modded car has in fact failed an emissions test.

I've been wondering about this for a while. If you search around on the web, there are plenty of DSM'ers failing with HKS 264s, and some passing too. Someone out there with a cammed Evo must have tried to pass a sniffer by now.

Like I said, anytime more valve overlap is introduced, the exhaust will be dirtier. But again, the bright side is that with cam gears, one can fix that for the emissions test.

Well I'm kinda in a rush and don't have the money for cam gears just yet. I won't have to get my car tested til it's 3 years old here so I have time. I've had these cams sitting here for about 4 months now and I'm getting tired of looking at them. Plus Al will be somewhat close to me for a custom tune in two weeks. If I had the cash I'd have cam gears too, but I'll have to wait on them for now. No big deal. Thanks for the replies.

If anyone has had their car tested and passed or failed post up and let us know. Thanks you.

Since I started this thread with a question I guess I'll go ahead and ask a few more sine we are all here.

Is it gonna be okay for me to run the stock 560's with these cams?

The stock injectors? Absolutely. You won't really need to consider larger injectors until/unless you absolutely reach the limits of your turbo, and you're a ways from that.

I have asked the same question a while back. David Buschur says there is no reason why 264 cams should cause emission problems. But, who knows for sure. My cams (Tomei Poncam) have been sitting on my desk for a few months. TurboTrix is too busy to squeeze me in.

There is a reason, and that reason is increased overlap courtesy of any aftermarket cam set. The question is if it is enough to fail the test. I've seen Taurus SHOs fail with larger cams. Apparently, some DSMs have wuth the 264 set, so it appears to be a possibility. Until someone can post a real-world result that demonstrates "yes" or "no" (?), it's difficult to tell what comes out of the exhaust pipe from guesswork.

I hear you. This is something we are all going to find out in about 3 years, come inspection time. I am going to have my car inspected, just to satisfy my curiosity. But, I don't think this will help too many people since no one else seems to run Tomei cams.

True, it could very well be that some cam sets will have a tendency to cause a dirty test, and others won't. No one seems to know where the threshold lies, and naturally, other mods and tuning adjustments will weigh into this.

In any case, again, if one has cam gears, he should be able to get even long duration sets to pass with a few minutes of retiming the cams for the test.
