You're probably right. My thinking was that at least HC emissions should be fairly well within limits if short term fuel trim is under control.

In my case I'm not sweating the emissions since Virginia is going to a purely visual inspection. No CEL registered, along with all emissions related components in place and no visible tailpipe emissions is a passing grade in Virginia.

Propellerhead, any idea when NoVA will switch over to the OBD-II electronic emissions check?

Just as a point of reference, the cam in my 95 Z28 has over 20 degrees more intake and exhaust duration than the stock and has a noticeably lopey idle (worse than a local 264/272 Evo that I've heard) but will pass (barely). I think it passes by a mile with the stock cam. The question for a newer LEV car like the Evo passing a sniffer with mods is how much room the testing standard leaves. For example, a 95 Talon with cams probably has a much more lenient standard than a new Evo. I'll be glad when this OBD-II test becomes the standard here in NoVA. I've been jealous of my MD friends that don't have to deal with the sniffer, though many of them are facing computer swaps just for the test because they've set their cars up with non-OBDII computers.

That's a good question. I may be counting my chickens before they hatch. I'm hoping the system is in place before my inspection comes due in September 2005.

I know that this won't be of any help right now, but....

My sister-in-law's parents own an oil chang shop here in town. I will have my evo checked after my tuning by TurboTrix in December. I have the following relevant mods:

UTEC/Tuner Pro
272in 272ex
AEM cam gears
700cc inj
TXS dp / cat delete / cat back
Walbro pump
HKS RS intake

I will reinstall the cat and have the car checked for emissions. I will "bookmark" this post and let you know how it turns out, as I am wondering the same thing. I should have an answer sometime late December, unless someone finds out sooner.

Hey any news on the emissions results of 264's or 272's? I'm trying to find a good deal on cams, and if a deal on some 272's comes along I'd like to take it, but I am concerned with emissions, and I can't afford the cam gears right now for the fine tuning. I do have the UTEC though, so I was hoping a good tune could take care of any problems. Someone here has got to have some practical experience with cams and emissions. Sometimes it seems like I'm the only one here who hasn't figured a way around testing

Not as of yet. I don't have to really worry about til at least another 1 and a half. If you want to get past it you could always register your car in another county that doesn't require emissions testing. If my car don't pass I'll end up doing that. All you have to do is register it to a PO Box and your set from what I understand.

Well I finally got my cams installed, but I went with the 264in/272ex combo. I am going to Dallas next weekend to get tuned by Turbo Trix. When I get back, I'll reinstall the cat and go to the emissions testing place down the street. I'll post back up after I get my readings. I should have them by the end of the month.

i just got my car smogged by a state ref with only 264 cams and a safc. i put everything else back to stock, even the cam gears because they didnt pass the hks gears i had. this is only because i cut they stock gear cover.

but anyways i passed emmisions, just not the VISUAL. so it is possible to pass smog with 264's.

The last WORKS TR-340 package with 269 intake & exhaust cams and ceramic coated downpipe (to keep the cat hot) passed the CA sniffer test with flying colors. The CO and HC were actually cleaner than a 100% stock EVO that was tested immediately after.

No cam gears are needed with WORKS cams as we grind the cams properly indexed to the stock gears so you don't have to spend the extra money.

Also we have a Brain Flash P2 version tuned for our 269 Power Cams (no extra tuning required) while retaining all the stock safe and clean maps for emmissions.

Truly plug 'n play.

Did you remove the Dynoflash too?

Do you have the actual smog readings vs. the limit?

I'm really happy that you passed with 264s. Now I'm getting greedy and wondering if there was enough room in the test results to suggest that maybe 272s would pass too
