Oil filter housing plug

What size are these two plugs that you can use for oil pressure and oil temp. I have heard both get a 1/2 to 1/8 bushing and I have also heard 3/8 to 1/8 bushing. So which is it? I'm assuming both plugs are the same size.

Can you use the oil filter housing to install the pressure and temp sensors? I assumed those plugs had something to do with the oil cooloer thermostat. I'm planning on using a generic sandwich plate and tapping some 1/8" NPT holes to install my sensors.

1/2 to 1/8 NPT reducer...yep, those ports work a treat! I would not want to move my filter any closer to the ground, and add another sealing surface....I posted a pic on oil pressure install thread...

well I don't know if they are NPT but I did buy the brass 1/2 - 1/8 bushing. My sensors thread fine into them so I think it should work and seal nicely with teflon tape.

I would tap into those plugs. Just get a bushing for the temp and get a bushing and a 90 degree elbow for the pressure. Don't try to T one plug because you won't recieve an accurate oil temperature. The oil sensor needs to have flowing oil on the sensor to at least recieve an accurate reading. I agree mttam I don't want my filter lowering to the ground and I have heard the greddy sandwich lowers it half the filter length. Thats to low for me I think. Rather safe then sorry.

Thanks mmtam for the measurements heres a for ya

They are BSPT, not NPT. Purchase adapters from McMaster Carr if you want the correct part. In fact do a search on BSPT or McMaster and you will find a great deal of material w/ pictures....

I bought my bushings from a local store they don't say if their NPT or BSPT or what and my sensors thread fine into them. I'll just seal the threads with teflon tape and I think it should be fine.

Well, the sandwich I bought is not that tall, may 1" at most. And I agree that I'd rather tap directly into the filter block rather than add the leak potential of the extra sealing surface.

So you're telling me those two brass plugs are blanks and there is no thermostat hardware behind them? I'll have to explore that option a little further. I've only got $20 tied up in the sandwich plate so I'm open to any ideas. If I can get an accurate temp reading I'd rather drill & tap directly into one of those port plugs.

I use the Greddy oil block and it does not drop the oil filter that low. My car is lowered as well, and I have zero problems or concerns. It has 3 taps in it, very good peice for under 70 bucks.

There is nothing behind the two plugs in the existing filter block. Many people have successfuly used them for oil pressure and temperature sensors. You don't need to drill and tap, just get the correct adapters (e.g. correct thread and pressure rating). Note that many people put the temp sensor on the port facing the wheel, while placing the pressure sensor on the other port. Based upon the size of the pressure sensor, an 90 degree adapter or a oil line is sometimes employed.

That said the Greddy block is easy to install given the plugs have sealing compound on them that makes removal difficult.

I just got a Greddy oil block, but the instructions are in japanese. Block has two smaller plugs and a big one. Have some questions
- which small plug is best for Defi 1/8 NPT oil pressure sensor?
- what's the best way to hook up a Defi oil temperature sensor to the oil block
- what is the big plug for?
- where you guys get a teflon tape?
Anybody has pictures?

I used the "long" 1/8 port on my oil temp sensor. I think the defi sensor is too long for the shorter 1/8 plug.

you can get teflon tape at any hardware store.

I may be mistaken and I don't have the block, but I think the two small holes are 1/8 and should fit the pressure and temp for the defi gauges. I don't think it matters which one you use for either. The big hole your guess is as good as mine. You can buy teflon tape at any local hardware store just look in the plumbing section. I would also like to see pictures of the greddy block to see how low it lowers the filter.
