***drop down to read updates***

Ok...so now I have a very nice grind going into 4th gear (from 3rd or 5th) that just started a week ago. My Evo is bone stock. 28k miles. I drive the car like friggen' Grandma most of the time, I never beat on it. Thats not to say I dont drive fast, I just dont act-a-fool.

Anyway... the main purpose of this thread is just to lay out for yous guys what happens at the dealer when I take it in for warranty repair. CarMax already put in a new clutch about 4k miles back. I am also going to report on the dealer's response to my Brake Calipers clearcoat flaking off (All 4 calipers) Id like to see the dealer try to wiggle out of fixing my transmission. Time will tell.

Read farther down to see updates!

I have heard of a few other drivers having their 4th gear syncros failing. The trannies on these are pretty beefy, but maybe 4th syncro is weak.

I purchased my Evo with 19k miles on it. I have no idea how the car was driven before me. Maybe it was the kid's first manual shift? I know you can burn a syncro if you grind the **** out of it. I havent done this so I hope to have no problems at the dealer. I have a meeting with them Wednesday next week. I am debating on even removing the autometer boost gauge. I want to give them NO reasons for denying the warranty work.

**update**

After the "testdrive" from the dealer today, they told me they would schedule me for fixing the bad syncro. The service mgr then told me that at ~9k miles, the previous owner had the dealer in KY replace the 2nd and 5th gear syncros. They told me since my warranty is within 5k miles of being expired, they would replace ALL the syncros in the trans! He also told me that they would inpect the gear teeth and if any of them were chipped, they would replace them also.

Needless to say, I was ecstatic! I really thought they would try to skirt their responsibility in fixing the car...ESPECIALLY since I was ~5k from warranty expiration.

Obviously, the car was BONE STOCK when I took it in for them to "testdrive" although the service mgr told me that they were leanient/easygoing about mods unless it was blatently obvious that the mod caused the problem (ie: not fixing engine with GT3037 turbo installed!)

Since I AM so close to being out of warranty anyway, I am contemplating an Exedy twin disc clutch while they have it apart..... Also, since my warranty is expired in 5k miles, IT'S TIME TO START PLAYING!!

*Update*

I stopped by the dealer today to check in on my baby. They had the tranny out and apart waiting on the parts. They are replacing the entire gearset and all syncros...nearly ALL the internals!! The service manager and master tech took me over and showed me the abnormal wear on the gears (I couldn't see it, but I dont know what to look for) He said since I was close to being out of warranty that he didn't want to short-change me so he authorized replacing everything. After hearing so many horror stories about Mitsu's response to warranty issues, I must say I was impressed by my local dealer's level of service. I might have scared him when I mentioned I had an attorney in the family!

Glad to hear everythings working out for you. They did the right thing because there was no reason to deny you warranty work. Keep us informed on how everything turns out. What did they say about the clearcoat flaking off your calipers?

**UPDATE** Arrggghhh!!!

You guys aren't going to believe this! The dealer replaced every gear, syncro, etc inside the tranny case which was a great thing...but...now the Service manager and the lead master tech at the dealer QUIT! They walked out the F***ing door! My evo is still in pieces and they have no one qualified to put it back together!! I am meeting with the "head idiot" at the dealership Monday morning. I don't know if he's the owner or the general manager, but I was lead to understand that he is top dog.

The tech got the tranny back together and mounted to the engine, but the xfer case, axles, and exhaust is still in the floor along with all the stuff that they pulled out to make room (intake airbox and tubes, etc)

I don't know what the mindset of this "master-tech" was when he was putting my tranny back together but if he walked off the job I DON'T TRUST HIS WORK!! I only have like 5k miles left on my warranty and I don't want to have another problem after the warranty expires that I have to pay for all because this tech got mad and F'd up my tranny!

I think I need a lawyer!

WOW man you are really lucky. My Mitsu dealership refused to do anything to my car because I have a exedy twin disk. They Keep giving me crap about my synchros going bad because of the clutch. I went back and forth from Mitsu corporate to the district rep. It was all energy wasted. So I sucked it up and getting the TRE-Spec Tranny and Tcase with LSD. Might as well beef up the drivetrain so I dont' have the create the oppurtunity for repairs in the future. Good luck man - glad to see someone is being treated right.
