Downpipe rattle??!!!!?? Help Please!!

I have a question and need some advice please.

I have a Helix 3" dp and whenever it rains hard or I wash my car in a high pressure wash, when I drive I can feel the dp rattle against something ( I am guessing the lower arm bar) It sounds like metal rattling on metal. Once it dries up there is no problem. BUt it is quite annoying.

Does anyone else run into this problem?
Am I correct in my assumptions?
Any way to fix this?

Thanks for your .02 cents

I talked to SP Engineering and was infromed that there is a little play with lugs that can be done to remove the rattle. Try loosening and readjusting bolts on a leveled surface or lift to fix the problem.

Double check your connections. If they are sure(they probably are) you can put spacers on your lower tie bar. If you do a search you will find pics.

cheers.

Ive addjusted it to many time and i think i got it licked . That rattle when it rain will drive you crazy....

I seem to feel it come from the floor. It is right below my pedals. It sounds like my car is going to fall apart (overexageration).

When i jack up the car and hit the ext/dp/muff it looks like the only place it hits is the bearing carrier . BTW mine happines alot more when my girl friend is in the car , I wonder if my evo does not like her hmmmmm

I have a similar problem, but mine is coming from the top part of the DP (Helix 3 inch). At first I thought that it might be rattling against the oil pan but it wasn't. It happens when I am at low RPMs, backing out of my driveway/ parking spot, and is made worse when it is cold.

thank you all for your input and knowledge. I might try taking it to my mechanic and seeing if he can't jack up the car and see if I can't take a look under their and if I can see where it might be rattling.

But I wonder why it would only do it in the rain, cold or when it was wet. why wouldn't it do it also when it was dry???

I have the exact same problem. It is actually the water evaporating off of the cat at an extremely high temp and it sounds like a rattle. I bet it is not rubbing on your car. Sounds crazy but that is what is making the noise on mine. Check it out.

I had the same problem but after got some Kartboy downpipe bushings from Gruppe-S, and that unwanted rattling issue has gone away.
I am not expert, but from what I can see after observing the entire EVO exhaust system design, the rattling is (well my setup that is) from the dp hitting subframe area caused by the vibration of TC/tranny during vehicle operation. Take a good look at exhaust setup of your EVO, and you will find that exhaust system design is flawed from Mitsu factory. 3 solid mounting point on the rear muffler section but no exhaust mounting support on the mid-pipe still puzzles me?! While the dp is tightened w/ 2 spring bolts up front w/ donut gasket and 2 soft rubber bushings to hold the downpipe in place. That leaves the cat, and mid exhaust pipe unsupported.

my 2 cents worth

extra clearance...

We agree it seems odd that this only occurs after a hard rain or car wash. Although, it certainly points out that it (downpipe) is obivously very close to the cross member.

You can space it down with washers and longer bolts or use our product that another member suggested prior. This prevents the bar from having to hang down as far and it is stiffer than the original crimped steel bar. Finally, you do get that added 'bling' whenever you do an oil change!

If we can ever help, please let us know!

from a handling stand point, does longer bolts and washers effect anything?
