Need Some Opinions!!!

so my evo started grindin into 3rd and 5th. no problem, bad synchro's are replaced under warranty. dealership calls me and says "you have some wear on your clutch. should we replace it? itll cost 500 for the clutch and 60 for labor since the tranny will be apart to install the syncros." i have 19500 miles (got the car with 9400 on it). now what is the going rate on a new evo clutch? i dont trust the dealership i use and they are the only mitsu place around. also in talking with a service guy, if i put an aftermarket clutch in (they wont do it) they'll void the warranty cuz it wasnt a certified mitsu tech doin it. then he tells me that their district managers have been going to the track at mitsubishis request to void evo warranties. so i guess mitsu was lyin to us about that. what else is new? so should i burn the 500 for the stock clutch or tell'em to kiss my a@@?

500 for a stock clutch... I wouldn't

if you really want to keep the car under mitsu's warrentee then do it cause 20k miles is already quite a bit for a stock clutch and 60 for labor is really cheap however for 500 bucks you can get an ACT clutch that will last longer and hold MUCH better than stock however if mitsu finds out you did it they probably will void your warrentee and it will cost more than 60 bucks to get it put in.

Hey there,

If I were to get the ACT clutch to replace my stock one, would that lead to any other problems I've heard of (transfer case in particular)? I was always under the impression that if you were to get an aftermarket clutch you'd have to upgrade something else to absorb any of the lost or gained benefits of the aftermarket clutch. Is this still the case or is the ACT clutch perfect for a stock setup?

I think they're like 4 or 5 hundred bucks. It's the labor that gets you.


Oh, if the labor is only $60 because they're already gonna have your tranny out for warranty, DO IT. Damn, I wish my synchro's went out.

actually i dont know if this is true or not but a buddy of mine said that in talkin with his mechanic, the act clutches are actually refurbed OEM clutches. again i dunno if its true or not but this guy has worked on A LOT of hooked up cars from evos to porsches so there might be something to it.

yeah the service guy was pushin me in that direction. im gonna find out if i can get the stock clutch for cheaper since another friend of mine works at a transmission shop. i might be able to get a few for cheaper if anyone was lookin

Refurbed?? What the... should look into that. If that's the case, negative on the ACT.

Sounds good to me. No matter which way you decide to go (through Mitsu or a friend), make sure you give them the clutch BEFORE they're done with your synchro's!

let me know if you find anything new on that. people swear by act though so even if it is refurbed they still must work pretty well since everyone and their mother seems to use them.

ACT clutches should feel almost exactly like stock but they are stronger and will hold more power than the stock clutch. You only run into drivetrain/transfer case problems if your putting a ton of power to it but unless your running over 400 hp then the ACT clutch with a stock transfer case.

Oh ok, word. How much do ACT clutches usually go for? This thread is great. It got me thinkin'. I've had this throw out bearing rattle from the first day I bought my car, but never decided to pursue it's fixing because it was nothing serious. Now that I need a new clutch, "Hey, my throw out bearing is making noises, could it be replaced under warranty?" Since I've got a stock car, I don't see how hard that should be. Then, shove a clutch into the equation and I avoid almost $1,000 in labor costs. Can't have it all, but this will definitely do.

ACT clutches usually go for about 500 bucks for a heavy duty single plate which is rated at up to 500 ft pounds of torque which is more than enough for the average Evo unless you plan on dropping 20k into mods and having a track only car. Labor to install a clutch is expensive plan on a few hundred bucks for that too depending on the shop I have heard anywhere from 300-500 for clutch install on the Evo
