Looks like a seal for the cv shaft, if the leak is coming from where the shaft enters the housing. The fluid would be tranfercase fluid,( thick, smelly, like sulfur) because the open front diff is driving that shaft. There should be a dust seal and a fluid seal right there. Seal replacement might not be too costly, although I am not sure what it entails.

anyone have part number for the seals? the guy that works on my car is not here until next week, just want to get an idea of how much it cost. I would assume only the shaft have to come off, not the clutch and tranny. Right?

I am with everyone that thinks it might be the seal of the CV shaft

If it is leaking where the shaft is inserted into the housing, then the seal would be in the area of # 13 in the diagram. If the leak is on the left hand (drivers) side. #13 is a circlip that holds the output shaft into the driveshaft. Pressed into the housing should be the afforementioned seals, like a rear main seal in an engine. I haven't spent much time under my evo, but the seal should be able to be replaced after removing the drive shaft. See how much the part is and talk to your mechanic. If you can get under the car for a closer look you might be able to see if the seal is damaged. Use some brake kleen to clean the area and inspect it with a flashlight.

If the car drives OK , it can be driven. But I would be wary of how much fluid was lost and of debris getting into the case. If you live in NY, I know there is a lot of junk on the roads. And from your pictures your undercarraige is pretty dirty. So drive out of neccesity/emergency, but personally I wouldn't be joy riding.
