A question for those of you with the deceleration noise
How loud is it? Can you hear it outside the car? I went underneath an overpass today with the window down and let off the gas; I was surprised to hear the ratlle echo through the tunnel. It's definitely got louder recently, almost to the point where I'm embarassed to let off the gas because it's so audible. I know Mitsubishi will do nothing about this too, especially seeing as I don't have the stock clutch

On my cars its always been super loud - I even changed the entire drivetrain out to my spare set up out of a wrecked car with 300 miles and it still makes the same noise - I got used to it !
Does the deceleration noise stay if the clutch is depressed? Is the noise only when you are decelerating at certain rpms? Mine does this and it does seem to have gotten louder. However, I have owned 3 AWD DSMs and two WRXs, and every one of them did this to some degree. I think some of what you are hearing is backpressure in the exhaust. I've heard it reported before that people have switched to stiffer exhaust hangers and the noise has decreased.

My noise goes away too if I step on the clutch, but it also goes away with the slightest tap on the gas when the clutch is still engaged. Hard to say if it is all drivetrain, but I think from previous experience, it is part drivetrain, and part exhaust. Interestingly enough, my wife has a 330xi BMW which is AWD as well. That car does make some of the same noises on decel as well. I think alot of what we hear is the differentials working in the AWD system. That noise started in my DSM AWD at like 50,000 miles, and it still making the same noises now at 90,000 miles, and this was after a brand new transmission and transfer case as well as rebuilding the driveshaft. Everything works fine, but the noise is always there.
