Boost Question?

What is the max safe boost level for a completely stock Evo VII?

dunno on a stock e7, but on an e6 you will get fuel cuts if you increase boost more than standard. Some have got fuel cuts from fitting free flowing exhaust and filter.

I suspect that e7 has the pretty much the same ecu as the E6.

Fit programmable ecu if you want more boost IMO.

the levels that it'll get fuel cuts vary from car to car. The max safe boost level for the internals is quoted by some to be around 1.4 bar and then with ARP high-tensile big-end bolts 1.6. Although some say the bolts don't make a difference, the standard engine will take up to 1.5-1.6bar. Is it RC that get 380bhp at 1.6 bar with standard internals? Anyway, I haven't heard of any engine failure because of the big-end bolts failing, so either everyone that goes that high changes them, or you don't need to change them... go figure....

Boost Question part 2

Does anyone know for sure when the ECU in the Evo VII cuts out?

The evo vi ecu will cut at about 1.3bars, the evo vii should be approximately the same.

Have heard that the Titanium Turbo (in the TME) has a slightly higher boost cut off.. (1.8) Is this true??

diyath,

Wrong, I have TME, got fuel cuts after chaning induction/full exhaust. Judging by the slow accelerating I was running, it surely wasn't 1.8bar.

true, but it does so by reducing the air flow signal that the ECU gets. This will mean that you can get more air into the engine for more power either by running more boost or other means. however it will also mean that the ECU will underfuel as it believes that tehre is less air going into the engeine than there actually is. This will cause the mixture to run lean which may cause detonation.

Therefore you will also need to do something to increase the fueling:-
bigger injectors, higher fuel pressure etc.

Personally I think that these boxes are a frig. better to get a programmable ecu and put yourself in control.

So basically what you are saying is, you can't be 100% sure you won't have fuel cuts unless you replace (or re-map) the ECU, and is not advisable to put a free-flow air intake unit without changing the ECU?

Bummer, There goes my hopes of installing a HKS Super Power Flow Kit which I got a VERY good deal on! and I can't afford a new ECU at the moment. Everything is still STOCk in my car.

diyath,

you can put the super flow kit in as i believe others have gone down this route and achieved good results. You just need to be aware that you are fooling the ECU and what potential impact that's gonna have.

Obviously there are safety margins built into the ECU to take account of temperature and fuel variations that occur not only country to country but also within each country. If you have good quality fuel you could use some of this safety margin.
