Leave the stock ones in there and get a good tune, this will get you a very good idle. You can slip on new cam gears without causing any problems with the belt, however don't attempt this job if you feel even a bit unsure of what you're doing.

i have also heard that cam gears are unnecessary unless you are doing a turbo upgrade as well.

what engine management are you using?

in that case you are probably ok to go without the cam gears, i have heard that the emanage and the v pro are sufficient for cleening up the idle without gears.

i am using the emanage, and a friend of mine has 272's with an emanage, the idle is really rough at a stop, but fine once your moving even a little bit, oddly enough the idle becomes near perfect when you turn on the AC at a stop

Actually he is talking about the cam gear adjustment slipping, not the belt slipping on the gear.
