Question Strange Garrett turbo...

A friend of mine got hold of a rather strange Garrett turbo, according to the seller it was a GT2840, the specs are:

Turbine wheel 55mm, A/R 0.82 (I’m not very sure about the 55mm, the GT28 RS should have a 53,85mm wheel?)
Compressor wheel 82 mm A/R 0.70

What is to be expected of such a turbo on an EVO engine? My friend also has a stroker kit waiting to be installed and we suspect that the turbine might be far too small?

Maybe he should look for a GT35 kit?

Is it possible to convert this 2840 to a 3540?

Too small. In general the GT28RS is great turbo for 1.8 ~2.0 it might surge with him.

How is your EVO btw

That's exactly what we thought, he said he might put it on his Nissan 200SX and go for the AMS GT35 kit instead.

Well, my car is still fast asleep during winter hibernation , next step is to change the manifold to one of those SSautochrome style manifolds, I will have it ceramic coated first together with the exhaust housing of the turbo and the downpipe. Then at the beginning of April I have scheduled a new tuning session and this time I have the correct exhaust housing, the cam position cylinder the correct way () and the guy who will do the tuning only works with Motec and has tuned lots of EVO’s so I’m confident that things would work out this time

Looks to me you have a GT3040, aka GT3082, aka GT3065.

Great turbo combination, good for mid 500whp at 30psi.

Ok, but isn't the turbine too small to be a 30?

swe, there's 2 version of the GT30 wheels .. a smallish GT30 with 56.5mm and the standard with 60mm ..

why don't you measure the turbine exducer ??

Anyway .. even a 3037 is too small for a stroker .. just calculate the flow potential of the engine at desired boost level ..

55mm (2.16) is the exducer size of the GT30 turbine wheel.

HKS just came out with a GT2835 kit but that's more designed for a stock 2.0L. if you want the fastest spool available, i'd say go with the HKS GT3240, but if you want the most power on a stroker, you'll need a GT35 or something even larger.

GT3071R = 60mm turbine exducer
GT30R = 60mm turbine exducer
GT3071R-WG= 56.5mm turbine exducer

Those are the correct measurements for the INDUCER of the turbine wheel.

Err, I pulled those from the Garrett catalog.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see the mistake I made.

Remember the big side of the turbine wheel is the inducer (where the gasses enter the turbine), and the small side is the exducer (where the gasses exit the turbine). It's the opposite when you're talking about the compressor.

just go to garrett's site..
i think they had a flow map on there somewhere...

they have combinations ...with displacement and the different turbos..
