Filter Test: MUST SEE

so.... there's lots of arguements over what filter ownz all... so, i remembered this article i found in my MKIV days... You may be shocked what you see, and, may throw your current filter away with the quickness... this will help ppl who drive their Evo everyday and depend on it so they are protecting their baby... what's even worse to remember, is that filtration is a major investment considering that if you don't seal off that blowby line with a oil catch can or breather, is that oil traps the dirt in it and could build up on the fins... not good since balance is key to a turbo's performance and life... but anyways... enough of my rant... read up this page... it's worth it...

and DO NOT miss the dirt filtration pics... like the HKS foam filter result for example...

good to point out... this happens on tractor trailers.. if to much collects in the i/c. the motor will run off the oil and within minutes you will have a 13 liter motor running at very high rpm.. those motors only run up to 2100 rpm.. and its a big bang when they blow up.. no way to shut the motor off either... this really only happens when some idiot runs the truck with a blown turbo seal...its higly unlikely in a car but it could happen

the results of this test were just plain scarey... i was all about the metal mesh filters and the foam, till i saw this... if i had a garage queen, it wouldn't really matter, but since it's my only whip, i need her to stay in top shape... and besides, the dry filter made the most power anyways...

That's pretty interesting. Everybody seems to think the HKS is the best for the Evo. I chose the K&N typhoon since I like their filters way better than the foam one offered by HKS. I've had no problems with mine. Very noisy though.

How often is your street ride subjected to so much dirt? I know of alot cars that dont even run air filters on there cars. Just turbo and a mesh screen over it!! And these guys have been doing it forever.

Hella old repost if I remember correctly. This test was conducted by an Apexi dealer in Europe. Ask the tuners on the board what kit makes the most power. I'll give you a hint, it's not the Apexi kit.

The best filters I have ever used or seen in my career (BMW Service Director) are ITG filters. They are made in Britain and are comprised of reticulated polyester foam NOT the same foam as HKS.

once again... lot's of variables... daily driver??? harsh climate??? if you live in drier dust states, it could be a problem... live in a snowbelt weather like i do... it could be a problem... I'm going to have to buy a new filter for my intake that i had on my car for roughly 2000mi due to the amount of dust that gathers under our hoods... i won't re-oil filters anymore... i never ruined any sensors or anything, and got good at it, but it's worth just paying the couple bucks for a replacement...

as far as power wise, they were all close... but it's the filtration factor that makes the difference... why would you want to run a filter that nets less power and has horrible filtration as opposed to one that makes slightly more/roughly the same and is night and day difference on how it cleans up the air??? i run the Injen set-up fyi, and their filters are def top notch...

if i remember, this was a repost, i posted about this a while ago ... but you see that sometimes there's a need to do this... sometimes there's just too much info to search through, and this helps out a bit...

as far as power, and the Apex'i not making the most by tuners on here, are they talking about the REAL Apex'i intake kit, or just the filter adapter??? i've never seen anyone dyno out the intake kit (pipe and all), maybe cause it's a lot of money... it's a lil' unfair to compare filters to intakes... (even though some drop in filters make more power than the kits lol)...

this test was conducted by an independant tuner mag in Japan... the original article is in Japanese...

i remember a similar test from when i drove an mk4 vw...however the test included the stock paper filter which reigned supreme over the aftermarket ones...the only downside to the paper filter was its life...however it flowed more air and kept the second test filter the cleanest

its odd that this test does not include the stock paper filter

every day. ever look at rhe window in the morning? ever see 10bazillion dust particles floating around in the sunlight? well, guess how much nastier it is outside? driving around on the road, tire dust, brake dust, dust from dirt and debris off the road. keep in mind that 20% of the oxygen we breath into our own bodies is dust from all kinds of shat floating around in the air...

ITG make anything for the Evo? An open element that we could use with other intake pipes offered?

From my experience, I had used the blitz filter. It's not as bad as the test showed for its result.

Periodically, I would clean my TB and see the amount of gunk on the butterfly. My blitz seemed to be as dirty as stock air filter, but it flowed a lot more air. Was my test scientific, probably not.

Yes, all you need is the overall dimensions of the under-hood area the filter will be living in and the inner dimension of your intake pipe.

The exterior of an ITG looks just like an ordinary foam filter, but the interior has a crazy honeycomb structure that is truly extraordinary.

HKS has the best pipe design and the worst filter attached to it. I am looking for a K&N cone filter to fit on the end of my HKS RS.
