lightweight flywheels

I have heard that using lightweight flywheels lighter than stock will cause the engine to become unbalanced and cause future problems on a car because of the balance of the mass that once was there is now lighter, throwing everything outta whack.??

I think that's the engine pulley not the flywheel If I'm wrong I have had my fidenza for over 25,000 miles and no problems here.

It's not about the balance of the motor. There is an ongoing argument about whether or not lightweight flywheels will affect the way a turbo car goes into and stays in boost. And less rotating mass means that in between shifts that rpm's drop a lot faster than with the added weight of the stock flywheel and the extra spinning mass.

LOL. Whoever told you that obviously doesn't know beans. How "balanced" do you think an engine is with 30lbs hanging on one end only? All of the power produced by the engine drives only one end so how "balanced" is that? Bottomline is if the flywheel is balanced, it doesn't matter what the weight is, the engine will remain balanced. Many aftermarket flywheels are not balanced at all so byer beware though.
One negative affect a light flywheel can have is that it will reduce the amount of torsional dampening which increases disc hub wear and increases transmission noises.

so is that saying you would or prefer one to stay with stock flywheel setup or no, get the fidanza .

Most importantly, what I am saying is get a flywheel that is accurately balanced, stock or aftermarket. Many afteremarket flywheels are not balanced at all, so ask. Precision machined is not near good enough, no matter how precision it is or what sales pitch they give you. If you resurface your flywheel, make sure it gets rebalanced as well for the same reason.

I am not too concerned about the disc hub wear since the stock EVO hub is pretty stout. Some aftermarket disc hubs may give trouble with a light flywheel, but the Exedy has a good design and should last a long time.
