Thanks Claudius, at least I'm not missing anything.

Why though does my 'intercooler spray' not actually spray into the air that flows over the intercooler ?

I have two nozzels in the airflow path above the intercooler, cant see any infront of the I/C.

If you can get the water to evaporate off the inter cooler it will remove more heat than alcohol. Water has extremely high latent heat. But the trick is to keep it on the intercooler long enough to evaporate. The volume of spray is huge it soaks the whole lower bumper area.

The dealer in town said the intercooler spray is a glycol based liquid that for now we'll only be able to get at the dealerships.

"A glycol based liquid" = windshield washer fluid.

The glycol is just there to keep the liquid from freezing in the winter...

On my IV, the two nozzels spray a fine mist straight down in front of the intercooler, so that the air passing thru the intercooler is cooled before it enters. It's not used to directly cool the intercooler surface.

I've got the feeling that the whole thing is a bit of a gimmick anyway. It probably makes a slight difference on hot days, but holding it down for more than a few seconds would be a quick way to empty your washer bottle.

If I'm not mistaken the intercooler spray switch can also be controlled to spray water for a longer duration with shorter breaks if controlled manually. I think this idea is really neat since you can help cool down the car with the flip of a switch on hot days so your car will stilll perform as well..

On the EVO VIII the intercooler tank is under the hood. The tank for the windshield is in the trunk on the pass side.
The use of the manual switch is to cool down the air as mentioned before in this post. You were right about the spray in the two and five second intervals. The cooler the air, the denser, denser air = more power, the manual intercooler switch allows you to continually cool the air durning hard driving conditions.

Someone asked earlier about a sprayer system for CO2 or Nitrous.. I think ZEX or Nitrous Express makes something that sprays over the intercooler... Its obviously safer than actually using nitrous.. but a small amount of nitrous INTO the intake charge just after the intercooler would have that affect, plus the power adder properties of nitrous.. A little would go a long way.. However I'm not sure how safe that would be with a stock turbo engine.. Anything that cools the intake charge will mean more air into the engine.

I think you will find it is controlled by the ECU and will only spray under certain conditions; i.e. under boost, etc, etc.

if you new evo 8 owners took the time to read the manual.. :P you would have read that the intercooler spray is in fact winshield wiper spray and does come from the same tank. For the manual mode, you have to hold the button down, but not for longer than 60 secs. otherwise you will burn out the motor
