Intercooler Spray Switch

Can somebody explain to me how exactly does the intercooler spray switch works. I know when the switch is set to the automatic mode the nozles spray water for 2 seconds in 5 seconds intervals. (If I'm wrong please correct me.) And what about the manual? What's the use on this one?

It's to cool the air coming into the car. The main reason to have it is like a cold air intake. Gets cold air into the intake because cold air is more dense than warm air. Instead the intercooler spray thing cools the air coming into the intake by spraying water.

on a sort of related note, where is the water tank kept?
I haven't seen any info on this, but I see it's in the tunk on the STi, which makes sence for weight distribution, but also adds an extra hose running the length of the car... tradeoffs....

On EVO IV, this system shares the tank with the windshield washer fluid tank. On V and onward, it is running on a separated tank that is located in the trunk.

However, I'm not sure on the VIII.

On the VII, it's a black reservoir situated rightmost and to the front of the engine bay, on the bottom right of the airbox. It's covered by a white plastic cap.

Is it a good idea to put some sort of liquid other than water in this water sprayer tank? Like some sort of chemical or naturally occuring element other than water that can cool the air entering the intake better than water.

I am wondering that too... what happens when it gets cold out? Windshield washer fuild? I don't think you want to be spraying anti-freeze all over the road....

Actually when you spray "NOS" as you said before, all you are doing is spraying a cool substance to make the intercooler cool the air inside to a significant colder temp., but my thinking is, why would you be so dumb as to spraying nos all the time, you could just get away maybe a hybid system, water/alcohol for those everyday, and then a CO2 system for some days when you will expect high temps, as CO2 can be really cold, F1 teams do it, it might actually work for cars if someone decides to test it out, let me go get a patent before someone does.

Spraying alcohol would be a bad idea in my opinion although it definitely will cool much better than water. If a percentage of that alcohol mist gets under the hood and catches a spark you might see a fireball coming out of your hood.

Up to and including the Evo V, the intercooler spray used the same reservoir as the windshield washer spray. So, you can safely mix the usual windshield washer chemicals (methyl alcohol) in with the intercooler spray water to make sure it doesn't freeze. Also alcohol will take more heat with it when it evaporates than water.

Only thing I am a bit wary of is spraying an alcohol mix right near the turbo and hot exhaust... I would be rather disturbed to see gouts of flame shooting out of the hood vents!

EDIT: oops, said practically the same thing as the previous post, oh well.

Here is my question regarding the IC sprayer.

Does the switch, when engaged in manual need to be held down, OR does it keep spraying until you press the button again.

If I was racing, I would like to be able to press the button and have it spray until the end of the race?

On my V it uses the same tank as the washers.

One question, it does not seem to be an intercooler spray, as the nozzels fire into the airflow path that misses the intercooler and enters the radiator (or are their more nozzels I have not seen).

My V also seems to have no auto mode, just a switch on the center consol. Is this normal, when I got the car, the spray did not work as some additional none standard wiring had been removed and one lead to the switch was disconnected. I am wondering now if the previous owner had and auto system that he had removed.
