Question HELP!! Leakin oil in timing cover

Alright, to make a long story short, the crankshaft bolt holding the timing and balance shaft sprockets on the crank was loosened and not torqued back to its full recommended spec. The first high rev after the engine warmed up resulted in an pretty loud rattleing noise. I pulled over, looked around under the hood, everything looked fine. Then i drove it straight home and pulled the timing cover to see oil (not alot) and belt shavings. I checked the crank, balance shaft, and oil pump oil seals and they're all fine. I figure the sprockets on the crankshaft broke loose and moved around a little. I just don't know what exactly broke to leak oil. I've been staring at the engine for a while and have't come up with any answers. Any toughts, ideas would be greatly appericated.

possibly could be coming from the top of the oil pan. don't really see oil on the actual front cover. onlt see some at the lip of the pan. i think maybe ic could've backed off a little the maybe just rubbed a little on the timing cover. if the car didn't die and still runs fine i would say you are ok. good luck

the timing belt tension was fine, everything was in time. car ran great other than the rattleing noise. There is oil on the timing belt and on many parts in the timing case. when i went to remove the crank shaft timing sprocket, it just fell off in my hands without using a puller. So i figured it being loose is what caused the noise. as for the oil, i can't find anywhere it could be coming from. the only things i can think off is a head gasket leak or the oil pump case or case gasket is broken.

Finding an oil leak can be a pain. I'd say to spend some extra time cleaning it all up so you can see where it's coming from, then crank it and just watch...hopefully the leak will show itself and you can sort it out. Best of luck as this is a bit of a distressing problem I'm sure.

Did you have cams installed? Possible camshaft seals behind cam gears.

I'm leaning towards the T- belt tensioner. Their hydraulic so theres oil in them. So if it leaked oil there would be less of a tension on the T-belt causing it to rattle.

Did you had any work done recently?

I installed cams about 500 miles ago. I was checkin the timings and doing a compression test the when the crank bolt got loosened. every thing looked fine. then i took the car out 15 min later there was oil and belt shavings everywhere.

Did you replace the cam seals when you put them in or use the old ones? you should replace them if you do cams.. and v cover gasket at the same time.. and use some liquid gasket on it
