Ap Organic Plate, new clutch release bearing?
Ap Organic Plate, new clutch release bearing?
Looking to buy an AP Formula clutch kit from Graham Goode but I'm wondering if I need new clutch release bearings for that kit as it says they're not included in it. Also, how difficult is it to change the clutch on a 6, or is this only for professionals....
Mk,
normally you would change the release bearing every time you change the clutch; on an ordinary the clutch will last more than 100 000 miles and at this point when you change the clutch you may as welll change the release bearing as they aren't that expensive.
However on an evo if you change the clutch at say 25 000 miles then the release bearing is likely to be barely worn. You could probably change it every other clutch or even longer. Check the condition of the old bearing- is it free to rotate, very dirty etc? also inpsect flywheel when youve dropped off the box.
It would certainly be worth pricing up a new bearing as its a fair amount of work to drop off the gearbox to change it.
Personally in your position i.e having another car i'd change it myself. Probably depend on how high up you can get the car. On word of warning thou' its possible to misalign the clutch (probably when you refit the gearbox) this causes severe wear to clutch and flywheel.

hmm dropping the gearbox... sounds heavy to me, not saying I ain't strong enough
I forgot I have the WSM and will read it tonight and inform myself about it. Thanks for the info about the bearing, won't change it.... and if it breaks I'll come and shove it up yours....

Michael, NO WAY you can hold the gearbox when it comes off. There needs to be at least 1 friend of yours. I saw the guys do it here and there were three of them to put it back, 2 holding it and one fitting the bolts. You dont want to do that yourself...

mk,
being such a tight **** englishman you'd never get the relaese bearing up mine
Claudius is probably right on the numbers you'll need for this. 2 to hold box and 1 to line it up and put in bolts, unless you can somehow take most of the weight on a jack or hoist?
I've not had a gearbox off on a transverse engined car, although have done a number on manta's (longititudinal engine). On these you can support the gearbox on your chest and then get your accomplice to line up and fit bolts. Bit painful on the ribs - just make sure you're wearing a thick coat. You also get covered with oil pissing out of gearbox.
