Intake Without A Tune?
From what I have gathered running an intake without a tune can cause a lean condition in the 3,000 RPM area.
Will all intakes do this?
Will it be lean enough to cause damage?

any intake will cause it to run lean becuase you are pushing more air, and not more fuel...the tune would allow more fuel to be used in that RPM range, causing it to "balance" out....you have to remember, the more air, the more fuel
i really don't think it's a huge issue, get the intake, i wouldn't flash until you have a lot of mods, cause you should reflash everytime you change something, un less you have mone to burn.
Hey guys, I am a 16 yr old and I needed a flash for my evo. I was wondering if a TurboXS UTEC EVO VIII would be good for my evo? I have read what this flash can do. I haven't ever flashed before so can somebody please get me started?
Get a reflash by Dynoflash or Turbo Trix.... don't get a UTEC, I'm 18... in case that makes a difference... as for the main question here, get an intake RIGHT before a tune, they won't all cause problems, but better safe than sorry, or stalled

Why do flashes have to do with age? You need a flash if you want to enhance the efficiency of your engine. You don't need it simply because you're young. Also, you can't flash it yourself...have to send it to Turbotrix or Dynoflash. You can tune or download maps to your UTEC, but without proper datalogging it can be dangerous.

Bolting on the intake will once again alter the A/F signal regardless of ECU settings. If you flash first, then you may end up running too lean.

How lean are we talking? Lean enough to cause issues?
I hear the problem is the intake pipe that throws off the MAF, I was thinking of getting the Apexi filter which keeps the stock tube, in which case it should be OK right? I talked to a few people that ran one without a flash and were fine...

Problem with an open element filter is that the mass air flow sensor doesn't "see" all of the air that gets by it because it flows through at angles that are different than what it was designed to do. This is the reason that the car tends to run lean with an intake. Tuning mostly fixes this issue. The problem is not that it flows more air -- it's that the stock sensor can't see all of the the air that it does flow.
I had the AEM short ram on my 04 evo and i noticed a big power loss, but when i installed it on my 05 evo mr, it seemed as if hardley anything had changed. Maybe i had a boost leak or something with my other intake...weird..??

That is why I am leaning towards the open box intake design rather then conicial filter design, I think thats where the problem lies..I really want the sound of an aftermarket intake but I don't want the negitave effects..Someone needs to come up with a free flowing low turbulence design..Who knows, mabye a tornado can even solve the problem

I think more research and testing should be done before a company sells, or you buy just a hard pipe with adapter and k&N filter on the end of it..Any thoughts?
