Dumb newbie question. But what's the extra risk with aftermarket cam gears? I mean, there are stock cam gears, ya? Do you doubt the quality of all aftermarket cam gear parts?

Thanks

Aftermarket adjustable cam gears have a tendency to "slip" and this usually leads to bent valves, etc.

I had aem adjustable cam gears on the gsx and never had a prob; and I've never seen a thread or post about somebody screaming cause their cam gears 'slipped' and broke their head.

If you want a good idle and are sticking with the stock turbo I would recommend 264/272 HKS's. I've seen them for $269 each and considering the cam of choice for DSMers for 10 yrs is the HKS's....

The GSC Cams have been doing wonderful things for those of us who have purchased them. Here is a recent thread and some dyno numbers on the 272/264 vs. 264/272.

GSC 272/264

The 272/264 combo was extensively used in the DSMs as well. The GSCs have also been less expensive than the HKS equivalents.

i agree that "264 on the exhaust, you need a BIG cam for the exhaust, you are just choking it" good point!

I agree that a 272 exhaust will give a better top end, but I believe the GSC 272/264 combo gives better torque down low, where I want it. It's easier to win when your ahead. As for idle, who cares? Flash it or increase your base idle.

I have the HKS 272/264's and I love them. Hit's hard all the way past redline.

I still don't get the point on a 272 intake, 264 exhaust. I guess it won't make that big of a deal with a stock turbo, but it seriously makes no sense OMHO. You suck in more air, less can go out, so you have less topend.

I get the 264 intake, as it helps idle, and the 272 exhaust as it helps in topend.

in response to the person inquiring about 272s cams and when the A/C is turned on on idle or whenever its running....i have a buddy with 272s and when he turns on his A/C the car actually sounds better at idle than with it off....almost stock which is awesome, this is a good thread I have decided to shop for cams and no idea which to get, i hope more people post their opinions....

well i'd personaly go with the HKS 264/272 combo if you're thinking about daily driving. HKS has been making cams for the DSM for a LONG time and has pretty much perfected things. or so i think.. Just FYI you'll need bigger injectors for running 272/272 cams.. you'll hit fuel cut

I think the idea is that exhaust gas' have a higher velocity than intake, so you don't have to have as much duration to flow. I think it was originally Buschur that noted the poor flowing exhaust side on the stock setup, but i think the increase in duration and lift for any aftermarket cam on the stock turbo setup will be able flow enough to prevent any power loss.

I have hks 272's and gears set to -3.5/-1 and it idles like stock. I notice a lope occasionally, but if the car is sitting it doesn't do it. Gears do slip, like my buddies fidanza's last week. They slipped twice and we broke a bolt trying to get them tight enough to prevent the slip. I suggest getting better bolts for the fidanza's if you get those kind.

I think with gears you can save some idle and move your power curve around a little to suit your driving style...it's pretty interesting...read silversurfer's thread or tedb's thread on it.

you don't really need bigger injectors for 272's, just get a flash or something to remove it.

From a logical perspective if every result that comes in from the GSC owners is at minimum the same as HKS or better in many cases, why would anyone spend the extra money?

BTW, for those of you interested in the 272/264 combo, my idle is rock steady but the motor has a great lope to it. This is of course all untuned. I'll provide further feedback once Al does the custom tune and hopefully have some dyno charts to show.
