4G63 Sounds like a barrel of Monkeys with hammers

Hi all, I bought a 95 Eagle Talon TSI to mess with. The kid said he thinks the engine is blown and has not been able to start it for 5 moths. I paid 1K for it. Well I got it started and man it is messed up. Have to keep it above 2K rpm's to keep it running and while it is running it sounds like 10-15 people are hitting the thing with hammers and a few of them shaking the car around.

Anyone know exactly what it is? Is it worth investing anything into or should I just buy a newer JDM with 16G?

Thanks Guys

Probably bent/broke valves from a timing belt jump. But I wouldn't rule out rod bearings.

You can always buy a scrapyard motor. DSM motors in yards go for 800 or so, sometimes less, sometimes more. Might be cheaper than a total rebuild (not that you can be sure the scrap motor won't also need one).

My 4G94 sounded similar when the radiator blew and she overheated. Had to keep it around 2k, which was hard when clutching and braking. No damage to my engine other than the radiator, but it sounds like you've got a much more serious issue.

If ur gonna get a whole motor, try and get a 1st Gen 6 bolt. U will need to mod a couple of things to get it going. But, has a better bottom end, and also the head and intake mani have larger ports. You could also try finding a JDM cyclone, you will pay more. That might come with an AWD trans and ECU for 1500. "Maybe"

I would almost put money on it being "crankwalk". I had this same problem. The main bearings went out, and was causing the rods to knock back and forth (the barrell of monkeys with hammers sound). I rebuilt my engine, and as far as I know, it is running fine. But, like was said above, get the 6-bolt and dont worry about crankwalk anymore

I will look into it with a local mechanic just to see what he says. Maybe a change of Barings a new timing belt will fix her up.

If not what do you guys think of a 7Bolt JDM 16G 2nd gen engine. They push 210HP. But may cost around $1700. Is there e rout I could go to have more horsepower and reliability for the same amount of money?

im goin to have to say it might be *crankwalk* as well. my 95 GST sounds the same but mine isnt as bad yet. the motor still runs perfectly fine at idle but sounds like a drum session when im driving it.

Sounds like crankwalk and a maybe a rod knock as well. Best thing to do is find a 90-92 6bolt motor and have it rebuilt. The motor will bolt right to the trans and there is only one mount that needs to be modified on the front of the motor. Then you have to rewire the cam angle sensor and injector triggers. And a evo III 16G will be the turbo that you want to get. Let me know if you have any questions.

Kinda scarry, text says "NO WIRING HARNESS". The pics tell a different story. Your tranny should work. There sould be a site somewhere that will walk u threw an install. And all the parts you will need for putting a 1st gen motor in a 2nd gen car. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

The trans will bolt up but you might need to rewire a few things. Like if some connectors for the Cam sensor or crank sensor and others are different.
