Sputter / Hesitating @ WOT [around 5500+rpm]

Ok I'll start off by saying that I have searched and found many many threads on the boards about this issue, and have tried all of the possible solutions that seemed logical, but I am still stuck. I hate making new threads because of the cry-baby's screaming WTF USE TEH SEARHC HHAHAHA I HATE U, but I need some help. So if you are going to respond with some lame comment, press ALT-F4 now.

Current Setup

AEM intake
Hallman MBC
720cc GReddy Injectors
255 Walbro Fuel Pump
3" Buschur TB Exhaust
Stock plugs (gapped at around .024) / Stock wires
Stock BOV (holds boost fine @ 20PSI)

At Wide Open Throttle [WOT] the car starts to sputter @ around 5500rpm, CAR DRIVES FINE OTHERWISE.
It seems like its not getting any gas or not enough gas (I can't tell.)

  • Fuel rail isn't leaking any fluids.
  • Plugs were swapped out with a known good pair and mine had a nice black coat of soot around the rim, but looked in good shape other wise.
  • Verified Spark plug gap @ .024 (is this gap ok?) <- EDIT
  • Ignition wires were swapped with a known good pair as well.
  • Checked all vacuum lines.
All seems in good shape with no wear/tear.

I recently just installed 720cc GReddy Injectors and a 255 Walbro Fuel Pump, and this all started happening a few days after the install.

Basically I was waiting to install Cams next and then do a Dynoflash tune to save $ on back and forth with AL @ Dynoflash....

But basically what I want to know is; Do I need a tune? Or is something screwed?

Is there anything left to check that anyone can think of?

Seems like you need a tune - I can do you at 2:00 on Memorial Day

Is the vacuum line still attached to the FPR? I had this come off and at 5500RPM it would sputter.

On the contrary, you are probably WAY too rich with those mods, those injectors and no fuel control. Assuming the injectors are all working, too much fuel is likely what is causing your high-RPM sputter. What prompted you to install 720 injectors with nothing more than a turbo-back and intake?

A gap that small is also pointless with those mods. With that amount of fuel, you'd want as much gap as possible In fact, at any point, you want a gap as big as possible without the spark blowing out. In most cases, a .026-.028" gap is more than enough for bolt-on mods + cams + more boost.

The plugs are probably fouled, so if you're going to get a tune, bring fresh plugs with you.

They were 50$ brand new from my friend. I was planning on getting a tune eventually

Plugs are not fouled, I have already swapped them out with a known good pair @ .024 gapped.

So .026 - .028 eh? I guess I will try that on top of going to Pruven on Monday.

Thanks all,

Wow, great deal! I would've bought them too, but I would've held off on the install at least until more mods and/or cams were in.

Plugs are not fouled, I have already swapped them out with a known good pair @ .024 gapped.
Are the plugs wet/completely covered in black carbon when you pull them? Unless you are running Iridiums at ~$50 a set, I would still pick up fresh set of NGKs if you are getting tuned. At $2/each, there's no reason not to.

So .026 - .028 eh? I guess I will try that on top of going to Pruven on Monday.
Yeah, that should be plenty safe as far as spark holding up.

Good luck with it and let us know how the tuning goes.

AL is right! I am %100 sure you need a tune! when I installed my walbro 255 my car was doing the same thing. AL tuned my car last week in Puerto Rico and now its running great but with 80 extra horses! hehehe

You will be great after the tune! dont worry!

untuned 720s will dump way to much fuel. Get the flash and everything will be back to normal
