If you broke a rod the piston would hit the spark plug and the engine would make horrific grinding sounds all of the time...even at idle. You might just be getting some detonation due to running too lean. Get the car to a shop and definately do not get into boost until a shop figures out what is wrong.

Its not a broken rod. Gauranteed. You have cams man...I know you had to rev it at some point. That can easily lead to a spun bearing. Which can not be seen without looking at the bottom end physically.

Another thing may be your valvetrain.

Did you do that socket extension trick (long screwdriver )? I tell you it will let you know where that noise is coming from. Its either in the heads or the block.

Hell, have you looked at your belts? Might be worn, It may be that simple.

Possible bad timing belt tensioner. Bad water pump bearings. Without being there to see. Its all educated guesses.

Take it to a mechanic if you cant find where the noise is coming from.

You cant run the engine with a broken rod. It would throw it through the block or beat the hell out of the engine and the noise would be horrible.

its possible you have a small fracture on a connecting rod and it will still run. try to determine if the noise is louder near the oil pan or if its louder near the valve cover. hopefully the noise is not internal, it would be nice if it were something not so serious. but considering your mods its a really bad sign.

its sounds like a spun bearing. Mines happened in Feb of this year. I just built the bottom end as a result... it was expensive... depends on the extent of the damage... the shavings from the crank/bearing can cause more damage. You can look at the oil for signs of shanigs or drop the oil pan all together. Hopefully your block isnt damaged.

and to all who've helped me with your positive input... Thanks people. I appreciated all of your input. I just hope I can resolve this problem soon. I miss my Evo.

sounds like a spun bearing to me also. Did you happen to have low oil by any chance? That could potentially be a prempt to a spun bearing.

Alvin, we'll get to the bottom of it this week and I'd be more than happy to give whatever input I can to get your motor fixed. There are several ways to go about it if your cylinder walls aren't damaged.

Since this is a repeat thread, I will repeat my belief on the broken piston.

Who is TT? Because it should not be hard to find the source of the noise.

smoggy thanks man, i hope we can fix this soon.

my oil level was fine, i'm just thinking that, before all this happened, i had a piston replaced by mitsu dealer. one piston. I was wondering if that lead to where i'm at right now. Becuase mitsu had to disassemble the whole motor to get to that piston. I'm not sure... maybe a human error on reassembling the motor?

But i'll keep you guys updated.

Thanks

probably the clutch... maybe the front differential...

if you break a rod, you'll know, really. Most likely if you break a rod, your motor will blow.

Sounds like no engine running with lots of oil dripping out the hole in the block and lots of smoke from oil on the exhaust and ya thats about it, BOOOOM also works, kinda like running over a tire thats on the street at about 35-50mph,

Please explain how broken rod sounds like...
