rear differential

how much does this cost? my evo is in the shop and they thought that the transfercase was the cause of the whining noise. they installed a new tc but the noise is still there. now, they say its the rear diff. they quoted me 2700 bucks for it, heck i thought it'll be cheaper than the tc....need help guys...

Yes, the rear diff assembly costs $2764.97, but it looks like you can purchase just the diff itself for about half that cost $1303.17. A new ring and pinion would only come to $480.22. Also remember that while these parts may be cheaper than a whole unit, there's going to be more labor involved and you (nor your dealer it seams) know's exactly what part is giving you troubles.

Unless you blew apart the carrier you DON"T need the entire case. Just go for the LSD
$1300

WTF? So you had to pay for a new transfer case due to their misdiagnosis? It doesn't sound like your shop knows how to troubleshoot and is just randomly replacing parts hoping it'll be the fix.

What oil did they use in the t-case? If they used the wrong oil, they probably toasted your new t-case, which is why it's whining and howling again. Don't pay for a new rear diff if they're going to use the wrong oil in that too!

yeah man. if "they" is the dealer, and if this is something that was determined to be at no fault of your own, then you shouldn't have to pay for "their" misdiagnosis. Your warranty should be paying for this.
